머리말: 왜 ‘기하학’이 장제의 언어인가

장제를 오래 해온 사람일수록, 결국 한 가지 사실로 되돌아간다. 말의 발은 눈앞에 보이는 각질 덩어리가 아니라, 말이라는 거대한 유기체의 균형과 성능을 결정하는 “기초 구조”라는 점이다. 발굽의 미세한 불균형은 단순한 불편함으로 끝나지 않는다. 서 있을 때의 무게 분배, 걸을 때의 추진력, 관절과 힘줄이 받는 스트레스의 방향, 혈액순환과 조직의 회복 속도까지 영향을 준다. 그래서 장제에서 가장 중요한 단계는 “편자를 잘 만들거나, 못을 잘 박는 것” 이전에 존재한다.
그 단계가 바로, 발과 다리의 균형을 이해하고 말 신체의 기하학적 구조를 읽어 발굽을 맞추는 과정이다.

기하학은 차갑고 딱딱한 학문처럼 보일 수 있다. 하지만 장제에서 기하학은 오히려 “생체를 이해하는 따뜻한 언어”다. 말은 살아 있고, 발굽은 계속 성장하고 변화한다. 그 변화는 임의적이지 않다. 말의 습성, 영양상태, 걸음걸이, 환경, 작업량, 통증 회피 행동이 만들어내는 힘의 방향이 누적되어 발굽 캡슐의 형태를 바꾼다. 결국 발굽의 형태는 힘의 기록이고, 장제는 그 기록을 읽어 다시 균형의 방향으로 유도하는 기술이다.

1장. 모든 발굽은 다르지만, 중심축은 하나다
1. 발굽의 개별성: 형태는 말의 성격과 환경을 닮는다

수백만 마리 말들의 발굽은 각각 다르다. 발굽은 말의 성격, 습성, 영양 상태, 관리 수준, 운동 형태, 보행 습관, 통증 회피, 생활 환경에 따라 변한다.
예를 들어, 한쪽으로 몸을 기울여 쉬는 습관이 있는 말은 특정 방향의 벽이 빠르게 성장하거나 반대로 특정 면이 더 닳아 형태가 달라진다. 누운 지세, 협답, 광답, 전답, 후답 등 자세가 지속되면 압력 분포가 달라지고 발굽의 성장 방향도 바뀐다. 보행이 빠르고 추진력이 큰 말은 뒤꿈치의 구조가 특히 중요해지고, 반대로 서 있는 시간이 많은 말은 ‘정적 하중’이 발에 오래 걸린다.

2. 공통의 핵: 중심축(central axis)은 오직 하나

그런데 이렇게 각자 다른 발굽에도 공통점이 하나 있다. 발굽의 공통된 중심축은 한 개만 존재한다는 점이다.
여기서 중심축은 단순히 “가운데 선”이 아니다. 중심축은 그 말의 사지 구조와 무게중심이 발굽 접지면에 전달되는 방향을 대표하는 선이며, 발굽 캡슐과 내부 뼈 구조(관골, 지골, 종자골)의 위치를 상상으로 연결했을 때 가장 합리적인 정렬을 의미한다.

중심축은 겉으로 드러나지 않는 경우가 많다. 오히려 변형이 심할수록 중심축은 숨는다. 그래서 장제사는 ‘상상의 지도’를 그리듯, 발굽 속에 감추어진 중심축을 찾아내야 한다. 이 작업은 단순한 기술이 아니라 숙련의 시간이 필요한 감각이며, 눈과 손과 경험이 동시에 요구된다.

3. 중심축을 찾는다는 것의 의미

중심축을 찾는다는 말은 곧, “어떤 부분을 깎고 어떤 부분을 남길지”, “편자 베이스를 어디에 놓을지”, “익미를 어떻게 도출할지”, “브레이크 오버 지점을 어디로 유도할지”를 결정하는 출발점이다. 중심축을 모르고 작업하면, 보기에는 반듯해도 말의 내부 구조와 힘의 흐름에는 어긋난 결과가 생기기 쉽다. 반대로 중심축을 찾으면, 발굽이 변형되어 있어도 장제 방침은 흔들리지 않는다.
그 차이가 결국 파행의 예방과 성능 유지, 그리고 말의 삶의 질을 만든다.

2장. 중력은 직선으로 작용한다: 균형의 물리학
1. 중력선은 굴곡되지 않는다

중심의 중력은 발굽이 지면에 닿을 때까지 언제나 직선 방향으로 향한다. 굴곡 되는 경우는 없다.
이 문장은 장제에서 너무 당연하면서도, 가장 자주 잊힌다. 사람의 눈은 흔히 “형태”에 끌리지만, 말의 몸은 “힘”으로 움직인다. 그리고 그 힘의 가장 기본은 중력이다. 말이 서 있을 때든 움직일 때든, 무게는 결국 지면으로 전달된다. 그 전달이 어디로 향하는지, 어떤 면이 먼저 닿는지, 어느 쪽이 더 오래 하중을 받는지가 발굽의 성장과 변형을 만든다.

2. 균등 하중이 발과 사지를 지킨다

발굽에 균등히 가해지는 힘은 말의 사지 구조가 지면에서 장기간 서 있어도 유지할 수 있게 돕는다. 힘의 균등과 평형에 접근하게 한다. 그리고 그 균등 압박의 평등은 발 뼈와 주변 조직의 혈액 순환과 건강에 영향을 미친다.

이것은 장제사가 “한 번에 완벽하게”를 경계해야 하는 이유다. 발굽은 살아 있고, 변화는 시간에 걸쳐 일어난다. 너무 급격한 교정은 구조가 적응할 시간을 빼앗는다. 반대로 작은 방향성의 조정이 누적되면, 발굽은 스스로 정상에 가까운 형태로 돌아오려 한다.
장제 방침을 세울 때, 우리는 “지금의 형태”만 볼 것이 아니라 “시간 속에서 어떤 변화를 유도할 것인지”를 반드시 함께 고려해야 한다.

3장. 기하학적 균형과 기능적 균형: 서 있을 때와 움직일 때
1. 절름발이의 시작은 종종 ‘불균형’이다

균형을 유지하는 발굽들은 궁극적으로 절름발이가 되지 않을 것이다. 다리 질병의 대다수가 불균형한 발에 의해 발생하거나 악화된다는 것은 잘 확립된 사실이다. 방치된 발굽들은 불균형으로 고통을 받는다.

정지 상태에서는 체중이 비교적 안정적으로 분배되지만, 운동 상태에서는 가속·감속·회전·지면 반발력이 개입한다. 그래서 정적인 균형(기하학적 균형) 과 동적인 균형(기능적 균형) 을 구분해서 이해해야 한다.

3. 기하학적 균형: 정렬과 공간 관계

말 다리의 사지의 밸런스는 기하학적 기능이라고 볼 수 있다. 여기서 기하학적 균형이라 함은 서 있을 때 말의 발의 정렬 및 공간 관계를 의미한다.

왜냐하면 정적 정렬이 무너지면, 동적 상황에서 나타나는 보상 움직임은 더욱 복잡해지고, 원인을 놓치기 쉽기 때문이다.

4장. 무게중심을 3단계로 읽어라: 몸, 다리, 발굽
1. 무게중심은 한 곳이 아니라 ‘계층’으로 존재한다

무게중심은 세 위치에서 볼 수 있다.
말의 몸에는 무게 중심이 있다. 또한 각 다리는 무게 중심을 가진다. 그리고 각 발굽 접지면에서 중력 또는 평형의 중심 위치는 사지의 발굽 접지면에서 수직 라인으로 떨어뜨려서 결정될 수 있다.

즉, 전체 중심과 부분 중심이 동시에 존재한다. 장제사는 이 ‘계층 구조’를 머릿속에 그릴 수 있어야 한다. 전체 중심이 어느 쪽으로 이동해 있는지, 각 다리가 얼마만큼 그 중심을 지지하고 있는지, 그리고 발굽 접지면에서는 압력이 어디로 몰리는지를 연결해야 한다.

2. 전체 무게중심과 발굽 무게중심을 동시에 맞춘다는 것

모든 물체는 중력이 작용한다. 말의 전체 구조에서의 무게 중심이 있으며, 세분화 해서 네 다리 각각의 발굽에도 무게 중심이 있다.
전체 무게중심과 각각의 발굽에 형성된 무게중심을 찾아서 가장 이상적인 트리밍과 드레싱으로 편자를 장착해야 한다.

여기서 이상적이라는 말은 “교과서 각도”만 의미하지 않는다. 말의 용도, 주변 환경, 기승자의 기술, 작업량, 말의 습관이 모두 들어간다. 그러므로 장제 방침은 항상 상식의 경계 안에서, 말이라는 운동 동물의 특성을 이해하고 수행되어야 한다.

5장. 3차원 균형 XYZ: 장제의 3대 균형
1. 발은 3차원 물체다: 축을 부여하지 않으면 길을 잃는다

다리 몸체 또는 중심에서 기준선의 끝에 있는 발은 3차원 물체다. 따라서 세 개의 축이 있다. 이 세 개의 기하학적 축 X, Y, Z를 지정하고, 이것을 장제의 3대 균형이라 한다.

발굽을 2차원처럼 “평평하게”만 생각하면, 문제는 반복된다. 발굽은 위·아래, 좌·우, 앞·뒤의 관계가 동시에 존재한다. 그러므로 장제사의 시야는 한 방향에 고정되면 안 된다. 정면에서 보고, 바닥에서 보고, 측면에서 보고, 그 결과를 ‘동시에 합성’하는 능력이 필요하다.

2. X뷰 균형: 정면과 후면에서의 좌우 정렬
(1) X뷰 균형의 정의

X뷰 균형은 사지의 균형을 정면에서 바로 볼 때의 균형이며, 좌우측 두 발의 균형이다. 견갑골에서 발굽 끝 지점까지 흐트러짐 없이 중앙 직선으로 떨어져야 한다. 또한 좌우 X 크로스 지점은 대칭을 이뤄야 한다.

(2) X뷰에서 다루는 대표 문제: 각진 및 축 기형

바깥 기형의 예는 팔자걸음, 외향지세다. 안쪽 기형의 예는 안짱걸음, 협답지세다. 일부 사지는 여러 편차를 동시에 가진다.
이때 중요한 원리는 간단하다. 무게 중심에 가장 가까운 면은 많은 무게를 지닌다. 정면에서 볼 때 굽에는 닿는 면과 닿기 전의 측이 존재하며, 보행 시 “어디가 먼저 닿는지”가 불균형과 마모 패턴을 만든다.

(3) “긴 굽을 제거하려는 과도한 욕심”의 위험

긴 굽을 제거하려고 하는 것은 좋은 생각처럼 보이지만, 절름발이는 종종 비뚤어진 다리를 정상으로 돌리기 위해 과도한 진입으로 제첨부를 강제로 중심축으로 이동하는 과정에서 실수로 이루어진다.
즉, 구조가 적응할 시간을 무시하고 급하게 형태를 바꾸면 통증과 파행이 나타날 수 있다.
따라서 X뷰 균형을 맞출 때는 “중심축 방향으로” 유도하되, 말의 상태와 적응을 고려해 점진적으로 진행해야 한다.

(4) 편자 베이스의 기본 원칙: 무게중심 쪽으로 확장

편자 베이스를 설정할 때는 사지의 무게중심 쪽으로 확장해야 한다. 편자는 되도록 발굽의 중심축에 가깝게 위치해야 한다.
외관상 편자가 돌출되어 “빠질 것처럼” 보여도, 그 돌출이 무게중심 이동을 위한 합리적 도출이라면 예후가 나쁘지 않은 경우가 있다. 다만 이 부분은 마주와 관리사가 이해하지 못하면 갈등이 생길 수 있으므로, 원리 설명과 협력이 필요하다.

3. Y뷰 균형: 발바닥에서 중심축을 확정하는 핵심
(1) Y뷰 균형의 정의

Y뷰 균형은 발굽 바닥의 균형이다. 발굽을 들어 확인하는 방법으로 중심축의 균형을 도모한다. 실무에서는 Z 균형보다 중요하게 여겨지는 경우가 많다.
왜냐하면 실제 하중이 전달되는 면이 “바닥 접지면”이며, 바닥에서 중심축과 대칭점을 정확히 잡지 못하면, 측면 각도만 맞춘다고 해서 전체 균형이 잡히지 않기 때문이다.

(2) Y뷰에서 무너지는 이유: 자세와 생활 패턴

누운 지세, 일어선 지세 등 다양한 조건에 의해 발바닥의 균형은 쉽게 깨진다.
말이 한쪽으로 기대 쉬거나, 특정 방향으로만 운동하거나, 한쪽 고삐로만 작업하는 습관이 있으면, 발바닥의 압력 분포는 금방 편향된다. 그러면 벽의 플레어가 커지고, 발굽 캡슐이 회전 변형을 일으키기도 한다.

(3) 도구와 시각화: 분필, 마커, 나침반, 아크

Y뷰 균형은 보이지 않는 중심을 “표시”하는 기술이다. 분필이나 마커로 중심 방향을 표시하고, 필요하면 나침반처럼 원호를 그려 드레싱 영역을 시각화한다.
이 과정에서 핵심은 “보이는 것”보다 “보이지 않는 것”을 상상하여 조각하는 예술성이다. 장제사는 조각가처럼 숨겨져 있는 정상 발굽 형태를 찾아내야 한다.

(4) 회전 기형과 Y뷰: ‘편자를 돌리는’ 위험과 원칙

회전사지기형은 뼈 축 주위의 편차로 발굽 캡슐을 왜곡한다. 이런 경우, 편자를 발굽의 중앙에 놓고 중심 방향 마크가 정렬될 때까지 수정한다.
단, 정도가 심한 말의 과도한 방향 전환은 피한다.
가장 합리적 장제 방침은 오랜 시간 지속적으로 변화를 주어 발굽이 정상 방향으로 돌아오게 하는 것이다.

4. Z뷰 균형: 측면 각도와 뒤꿈치의 생명
(1) Z뷰 균형의 정의

Z뷰 균형은 측면에서 바라볼 때 이상적인 발굽 각도와 균형을 말한다. 기하학적 균형의 Z 차원이라고도 한다.
측면 각도는 단지 보기의 문제가 아니라, 힘줄과 관절이 받는 장력의 방향과 관련된다. 너무 높이면 특정 구조에 과부하가 걸리고, 너무 낮으면 다른 구조에 부담이 간다.
