Produced by two-time Grammy-winner Daniel Tashian (co-producer on Kacey Musgraves’s widely acclaimed Golden Hour), Winner, the third full-length album from Overcoats, marks an evolution of the graceful musicality first displayed on Overcoats’ debut album YOUNG (a 2017 release that earned praise from outlets like the New York Times and NPR Music, who placed it at #4 on its best-of-the-year list). As a bold departure from YOUNG’s sparse electronic pop and the atmospheric indie-rock of The Fight (a 2020 release that nabbed them a Breakthrough Artist nomination from the American Association of Independent Music), the album encompasses a warm and luminous sound sculpted from a tightly curated mix of elements: earthy guitar tones, elegantly rugged textures, the duo’s signature heavenly harmonies.

Winner is out April 7th, 2023. Pre-order here: orcd.co/overcoatswinner

Overcoats

Our tarot card/song explanations continue with one of our favorites from the record: Apathetic Boys. This song is a tongue in cheek commentary on men's domination of and restrictions on rock 'n roll. In the face of apathy, we, as women, come off as overly emotional. We feel it all so they don’t have to. We wanted to play that up and give in to their worst fears. The song was incredibly fun to write, and makes you want to flip your hair (if you have any). We found a lot of anger and confidence in this song. You’ll see us perched on a vintage car with a bridge behind us on the tarot card. The bridge that still separates how different genders are treated. The illustration for this card was deeply inspired by Thelma and Louise, a big f*ck you to the patriarchy. Get angry, get feminist, and rock out to this BOP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Puma4...

Overcoats

The card that accompanies this song depicts a man at a desk, surrounded by paperwork, burning the midnight oil. In the foreground we stand with our palms mirrored, desperately seeking to understand the male domination of our industry.
YJSTS speaks to our frustration with the stagnancy of certain things in the world right now. In the era of #metoo, we have this sense collectively that we are making progress. But this song talks about those people who refuse to change, while the world attempts to evolve around them. There are so many microaggressions in the industry and in the studio. We wrote this song about walking into a room and being expected to sing the topline….and only that. It’s about never being handed an instrument. This song is about walking into a venue and being ignored while our male drummer gets asked about the tech specs of our set up. We wanted to explore gender dynamics, the desire to be recognized while simultaneously avoid categorizations. This song is the pessimistic counterpart to the feeling of hope that defines a lot of the record. Listen to YJSTS here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xko5J...

Overcoats

In the illustration for this tarot card, we create a protective shell for ourselves. Under a sky of birds and amid a landscape of palm trees, we are singing to each other about the utter exhaustion of loving someone and receiving apathy in return. This song is about how, in those moments, everything loses color and joy. It’s about loving someone and asking simply to be treated right in return. We recorded this all in one take, facing each other in the studio. The backdrop is acoustic guitar over a field recording of birds chirping outside our house in Beachwood Canyon, where we were staying while we made the album. This song acts as a question mark, at the end of the record. It’s a final moment of doubt and insecurity, after the triumph of courage and perseverance. The fight is never really over.

Overcoats

We imagine most of you are freaking out. We are too. For the next week, we will be posting the tarot card designs for each song on the album, and writing about about what the songs mean to us. JJ and I will be taking turns- this is Hana today. Our spiritual calling as musicians has always been to offer hope and healing. Our new record is feeling scarily apt right now — but we hope that it can also be a resource to you all who need a little distraction right now, or a little hope. So, here goes.

The Fight is the thesis of the record, and the words that have gotten us through the past two years. It's existential in nature -- the song is about how, in the face of hardship and tragedy, life must go on. We wrote the song in 2018 after our own struggles with anxiety and loss. JJ called me up one day and said “I’ve written something, you need to come over.” So I trekked from Brooklyn to Manhattan and she sang me one line: “this is the fight, I know you’re tired, night after night, the great divide.” We both teared up because we needed those words. And we needed that melody. We sat down and wrote the rest of the song that afternoon. The song starts as an ode to friendship and a promise to stand by someone through thick and thin. “Put the beer down, just talk to me now, I’ll help with those demons you carry.” The chorus is an anthem. It's a fight to get through it, but an important one. And it's a fight that gets a bit easier when we realize we all have each other.

The illustration for this song draws on the imagery from the album cover and the stance we took for the shot. We are facing each other, ready to do battle, pushing and pulling, ready for the fight. We stand in the foreground as a winding path leads to the distance. Flaming guitars are crossed directly behind us to signal the new era of rock music we are diving into on this record.

We hope that through all of the anxiety and the fear right now, you can find the fight within you. And know that whether it’s coronavirus, our dysfunctional government, or our own demons, we each have the power to make things better. Especially when we fight together.
