First year In Medical Device Sales

My name is Jacob and I am a former personal trainer who was able to break into medical device sales with no prior sales experience. I received four job offers from top medical device companies and accepted a full-line sales rep (territory manager) role with one of the largest medical device companies in the world.

I took over the lowest-performing territory in the nation and grew it over 200% in under two years, becoming one of the top 10. Now, I am a Regional Sales Manager of the Western USA region for a Med Tech company. My goal is to help you get promoted and have success in the industry as fast as possible

We will share real experiences, tips, and ideas so you can become the best rep possible

If you're constantly seeking approval from people who haven't achieved what you want, you're setting yourself up to stay stuck. I see it all the time—people ask their parents, friends, or colleagues for advice about breaking into medical device sales… but those same people have no clue what it actually takes.

Your parents might tell you to get a ""safe"" job. Your friends might say ""it's too risky."" But are they living the life you want? If not, why are you taking their advice?

Here’s why most people stay stuck:
❌ They let fear make their decisions for them
❌ They take advice from people who have never done what they want to do
❌ They overthink, instead of taking action
❌ They prioritize comfort over growth

The people who win in this industry (and in life) think differently:
✅ They seek mentorship from top performers, not skeptics
✅ They understand that growth means taking calculated risks
✅ They invest in themselves and their future, even when it's scary
✅ They take action, even when they don’t feel 100% ready

💭 What if, instead of playing it safe, you went all-in on your dreams?

The Difference Between Staying Stuck and Moving Forward in Medical Device Sales
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

🔹 Why do some reps crush it year after year while others struggle?
🔹 Why do some people break into medical device sales in weeks while others try for years?
🔹 Why do top reps consistently find better opportunities while others get stuck?

The answer? They take action.

Success Comes to Those Who…

✅ Stay Hungry for Growth – It’s not about money, it’s about who you become.
🔹 The best reps are always learning, always refining their approach.
🔹 They never settle at “good enough” – they push for better.

✅ Do What They Say They’ll Do – Follow-through is everything.
🔹 If you promise to show up early, actually show up early.
🔹 If you say you’ll follow up, send the email.
🔹 The difference between average and elite is consistency.

✅ Don’t Expect Handouts – No one is coming to save you.
🔹 10+ years of experience means nothing if you’re still waiting for an opportunity.
🔹 Reps who expect jobs to be handed to them? They stay stuck.

When the Pressure is On, How Do You Respond?

The reality of medical device sales is that you can’t be everywhere at once. Surgeons expect you on call 24/7, hospitals have emergencies, and new business is the only way to grow. The question is: How do you handle the impossible?

The Right Approach to Crisis Management:

✅ Prioritize Smartly – Not every surgeon, hospital, or account is the right fit.
🔹 If staying with one account means never hitting quota, you need a game plan.
🔹 Focus on relationships that align with your growth goals.

✅ Control the Conversation – Doctors and hospitals will push for what they want, but you set the boundaries.
🔹 If you can’t physically be in two places, communicate with confidence.
🔹 Reaffirm your value: “I’ve been here every day for a year—one absence doesn’t erase that.”

✅ Know Your Worth – If an account threatens to drop you after years of service, it was never truly stable.
🔹 The most successful reps don’t beg for business—they create new opportunities.
🔹 A $600K account will always be worth more than a $30K headache.

The Reps Who Win in Medical Device Sales:
🔹 Make tough decisions based on growth, not fear.
🔹 Communicate professionally and assertively.
🔹 Stand firm in their value without overextending themselves.

Are You on Track or Falling Behind?

The top reps in this industry aren’t waiting for things to happen—they’re making them happen. If you’re struggling to hit your numbers, ask yourself: Are you reacting to your territory, or are you controlling it?

Key Takeaways to Dominate 2025:

✅ Plan with Precision – Break down your quota step by step:
🔹 Quarterly → Monthly → Weekly → Daily → Surgeries per day
🔹 No tracking = no results. Winning reps don’t hope they hit quota—they know how they will.

✅ Take Extreme Ownership – No more waiting for things to “fall into place.”
🔹 No one is coming to save you. Not your manager, not your reps, not anyone else.
🔹 If you’re behind, look in the mirror, adjust, and execute.

✅ Excuses Are Useless – Yes, your challenges are real. But they won’t change your outcome.
🔹 Backorders? Find alternatives.
🔹 Bad manager? Learn elsewhere.
🔹 Tough territory? Outwork and out-strategize your competition.

The Reps Who Win in 2025:
🔹 Have a Clear Strategy – They know exactly which accounts, doctors, and opportunities will help them exceed quota.
🔹 Are Proactive, Not Just Busy – They don’t waste time running in circles. Every move is intentional.
🔹 Invest in Themselves – Instead of waiting for a break, they create one. They learn, adapt, and level up.

How to Dominate Quota Planning in Medical Device Sales

Quarter 1 is a Wash – So What’s the Game Plan? – The first 90 days can make or break your year. You’re either looking at your quota thinking, “I got this,” or you’re already stressed about how much work you need to do. Either way, success comes down to your plan.

Key Takeaways:
✅ Your Quota Will Come—Don’t Panic – Instead of stressing, use this time to set up your territory and build your pipeline.
✅ Break Down Your Numbers – Quarterly → Monthly → Weekly → Daily → How many cases per day? Track this relentlessly.
✅ Find Your Growth Opportunities – What accounts, doctors, or surgery centers can you expand into to ensure you exceed quota?

What High-Performers Do Differently:
🔹 They Take Control – You are the reason you succeed, not your company or manager.
🔹 They Stay Consistent – The reps crushing it at the start of the year aren’t always the ones at the top at year-end. The ones with a detailed plan win.
🔹 They Overcompensate – If the goal is 2 cases per day, plan for 4. Hitting quota isn’t enough—exceeding it secures your success.
