Hello sports viewers! I picked up a digital converter as I work toward completing the first episode of the docuseries Full Court Queens: A Miss Basketball Minnesota Story. While I scrounge up the tapes I need to tell the story in full, if you have any old videos you'd like to digitize, I can accept just about any tape/DVD format. If you're interested, send me an email (located in my profile tab) or a DM on social media!
Greetings to my basketball family (and anyone else who is part of the family).
Over the last 19 years, we developed, refined and perfected our "DIY ESPN" model of high school sports broadcast coverage, giving you a first look at fantastic figures like Chet Holmgren, Jalen Suggs, Tayler Hill, Rachel Banham and Paige Bueckers. For a time, our games were outdrawing livestream coverage from other outlets, but several changes in recent years caused us to reassess the purpose of our TSB Television channel.
First, the pandemic led to an increased focus on live streams over broadcasts with higher production value. This isn't a criticism of the audience, just an acknowledgment that what they value might not fully align with what stations like ours provide. After the worst of the pandemic passed, several stations in the Twin Cities added me to their roster of broadcasters, to a point where I'm calling games virtually every day of the week during the school year. To put it simply, there's only one me and a lot of parties to consider. Finally, adjustments to the algorithm led to decreased viewership of sports broadcasts across virtually every channel who offers it. That in turn has lowered the revenue we draw from our YouTube partnership, making game coverage more difficult to justify from an economic lens. Support from local boosters has mitigated the impact on a few occasions, but trendlines suggest that our games won't be drawing 100,000+ viewers like they once did.
Where do we go from here? Our game coverage won't go away entirely, but we'll likely concentrate our efforts on invitationals and leagues that aren't covered at the same level as a typical high school game. Taking inspiration from our work with the Minnesota History Center's Girlhood exhibit last year, we also plan to produce more documentary-style programming, including a series featuring all the Miss Basketball Minnesota winners we interviewed for the Girlhood exhibit.
To achieve this mission, we're looking to raise funds to cover equipment and potential licensing costs. In the near future, we'll roll out updated perks on our Patreon and YouTube membership pages to reflect our retooled mission, but if you wish to join us now, you can sign up for a YouTube membership here or visit the TSB Television Patreon page: www.patreon.com/tsbtelevision.
Whatever the future holds, we'll provide a platform for people in sports and elsewhere to share their stories! Thanks for listening, and we'll see you next time!
The high school basketball season is here! We'll have extensive coverage Thanksgiving weekend with our usual assortment of state tournament contenders and a wide-open race for Miss Basketball Minnesota.
What the TSB schedule looks like after Thanksgiving is still evolving. Like last year, we'll be balancing other commitments, but our plans took a hit with an unexpected health care expense that has reduced the broadcasting budget considerably. We don't want to pull the plug on a model that has given us great exposure over the years, including the Girlhood exhibit at the Minnesota History Center, but it does mean we'll need more assistance if there's a player, game or team you hope to have featured on our TSB Television channels.
If you'd like to help ensure long-lasting digital coverage of your favorite athletes, you can sign up for one of our membership tiers or contact us directly through social media or tsbtelevision@gmail.com! We'll follow up soon with our December schedule!
We'd like to begin this post by thanking all the new patrons who joined us over the extended holiday weekend. Your support help makes our coverage possible, and we aim to offer plenty of it in the month of January.
There are a couple of points we'd like to clarify regarding invitationals. For the Hall of Fame Classic, our hope was to partner up with a live streaming outlet to provide coverage of all the games, but those talk didn't pan out. As of now, we plan to cover the girls games at the Hall of Fame Classic. The match-ups are as follows:
Minnetonka vs. Benilde-St. Margaret's, Goodhue vs. Pine City, Hopkins vs. Roseville
There are also three boys basketball games slated for that day (Hopkins vs. Andover, Austin vs. St. Francis, Lakeville North vs. Eden Prairie). If we can get enough funding through sponsors or other contributions, we'll add those games to the schedule.
On a related note, another invitational taking place is the Minnesota Fury MLK Classic at St. Catherine University in St. Paul on January 16th (girls basketball). We'll provide another update when that schedule is finalized, but participating teams include Chaska, Duluth Marshall, Eden Prairie, Holy Angels and Visitation. Invitationals are a great way to see a lot of teams in one place, but ensuring broadcast coverage for every game requires a higher degree of investment. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining our group of supporters, your name will reach an audience of nearly 13,000 subscribers and a viewership of over 100,000 per month.
Thanks for being with us as we continue our winter basketball coverage. We'll see you on the court!
It's been a while, but we haven't gone anywhere. Our schedule has been occupied with commitments from other stations; this writer is on the roster of announcers for six of them in the Twin Cities area. One side effect is our ability to schedule games in advance, as we have to stay on alert for potential assignments with other broadcast outlets.
However, our activity will resume soon as a new basketball season approaches, starting with the annual pair of Thanksgiving Tip-Off events. Several new teams are participating, giving us a terrific first glance at possible state tournament contenders. Three defending state champions will take the floor at St. Thomas Academy, while Hamline will showcase teams in the conversation.
If there's a team you would like to see on this or future lists, consider adding yourself to our contingent of subscribers. The more supporters we have, the easier it is to ensure your team is part of our TSB Television coverage!
That time of the year is almost here! We'd like to thank all of you who tuned in for our fall sports coverage, and we're proud to announce our return to winter basketball! We begin with a pair of Thanksgiving invitationals, and we hope to bring you as many games as possible. If you want to see your favorite player or team on our broadcast list, consider sponsoring us on Patreon, PayPal or CashApp. #mshsl#basketball
We recently got an inquiry about the playback quality of our videos, and we thought it was best to answer this way in case anyone else has that question as our full-length sports broadcast coverage returns. Our encoding and uploading process hasn't changed, but we have no control over processing time once a game has been uploaded to our channel. We did notice our videos eventually are viewable in 1080 Full HD, but the process can take a few days instead of a few hours. We hope the issue is rectified, and we'll explore potential solutions if something can be done on our end. Until then, we ask for your patience, and we hope you're enjoying a resurgence of Twin Cities sports broadcasting!
It's been a minute since we last spoke. Our sports coverage was limited last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its related restrictions that were in place. We stayed active with highlight reels and new episodes of our Mic'd Up Sports series, but we're proud to announce a return to full-length broadcast coverage of sporting events for the 2021-22 school year! Just like before, you can find our games on the TSB Television YouTube channel and Twin Cities community cable television stations.
We hope to bring you all the games listed without interruption, but safety remains paramount as we continue to navigate the pandemic. We'll do our best to keep you updated on any schedule changes. Speaking of change, both soccer and volleyball added an extra class for the 2021 season, which should level the playing field throughout the state of Minnesota and give us more opportunities to highlight ranked teams in the metro and beyond!
One thing that isn't changing is our perks, so if you want to help us provide long-lasting digital coverage of your athletes, send us a sponsorship on Patreon, PayPal or CashApp and we'll be happy to give your business or organization a spotlight. We'll see you on the court and on the field! #mshsl#sports
We're excited to announce that our Mic'd Up Sports podcast series has been placed on Spotify! We'll feature audio versions of our interviews and some exclusive conversations you won't find anywhere else!
