Day 7 of reviewing an episode of BFDI every day until Silksong releases: S1 E7 "Puzzling Mysteries" There is a 0.645% chance that Silksong will release tomorrow!
Thoughts—
This episode was over pretty fast (thankfully, as I got to this pretty late). I'll make things fast for you, too.
Cake At Stake: Needle uses her first win token! Well, the first win token. Of the entire series. But... she still gets eliminated. I don't like to be superstitious, but maybe it's because she slapped others 13 times before that point...? 13 is an unlucky number, after all.
Challenge: Before the challenge officially starts, we get our second Yellow Face ad! Oh, yeah. I didn't really comment on that last time, huh? Well, at first, the viewer doesn't know his name. But later on in the series, we know his name as "Yellow Face." These ads are pretty legendary by BFDI accounts. There aren't many later on in the series because... well, you'll see. Either way, it's nice to see him here!
The actual challenge starts as a puzzle challenge. It's a fairly easy puzzle, and you can tell that the creators are still starting out due to the ease of the puzzle, both mechanically and story-wise.
Losers: The losers are the Squishy Cherries. Apparently, they both didn't know that the puzzle was upside down, but they were also all completely incompetent. A bit of a spoiler, but they end up solving it the day after (or, if we take words literally according to the show, at least a month). They were also forced to give up Firey to the Squashy Grapes.
Overall: Yeah, I'll be honest, this has many of the same problems as episodes 4 & 5. Right out the bat, I'm giving this episode a D-tier rating. Sorry if you thought the Yellow Face ad was going to positively affect scoring. It's still a bad episode all around. But, since it's still over quick, it's not getting a lower rating. No fuss leads to no fuss.
Sorry everyone, I completely lost track of time! I'll make sure to get the next review out tomorrow! But just so you know, there's a 0.641% chance that Silksong will release tomorrow, and growing!
Day 6 of reviewing BFDI episodes until Silksong comes out: S1 E6 "Power Of Three" There's a 0.637% chance that Silksong will come out tomorrow—and growing!
Also, sorry for posting this late! Really didn't mean to, but time caught up with me!
Thoughts—
Okay, so I might have some bias here, but this is probably one of my favorite episodes in the whole show. It has so much going on, and there's even some use of math! Like, advanced math!
Cake at Stake: CAS was pretty fun this time around. But let's cut to the chase here: Pin was eliminated. I saw this coming from a mile away. For some reason, Michael and Cary really wanted you to hate Pin. You'll see later (much later) why this may have been the case. But, for now, we'll just stick to the regular stuff.
Also, that math thing I was talking about? "The factorial of the difference between the square of the number of spatial dimensions in this universe and one more than the smallest perfect number." It was a pretty good bit and shows how mathematically ahead Michael and Cary were (apparently they were like 11???)
Challenge: The challenge had a bit going on, so let's break it down:
Teams are temporarily split up into 5 groups of 3 total.
Get to the first island, where you have to look through many safes for a raft to the second island.
On the second island, stack blocks to reach a key for the third island.
On the third island, you might find that the key is a fake. If it is, go back to the second island to get the real one.
Pen, Eraser, and Firey got through the challenge first. Meanwhile, Coiny, Ice Cube, and Needle got through last, leading to the most wonderful chorus I've ever heard!
Losers: Like I said, Pen, Eraser, and Needle got through to the third island last, meaning they got eliminated. It kinda feels like they were cheated by sb, but... I think it's fine, since sb is definitely a boyboss (girlboss, but male).
Overall: LOVED this episode, especially after the snoozefest that were episodes 4 & 5. Straight out of the water, I'm giving this episode an SS rating. I know, I know, it's not the best episode all things considered. But I really liked it. It's one of the only episodes where I remember almost all events in order. I think that's because it's memorable!
Day 5 of reviewing every episode of BFDI until Silksong comes out: S1 E5 "Bridge Crossing" There's a 0.633% chance that Silksong will come out tomorrow, and growing!
Thoughts—
Overall, this episode was pretty mid. I don't have a lot to comment on about it, so I'll make it brief.
Cake at Stake: Woody was, unfortunately, eliminated. Too bad, because he was—and steadfastly is—my favorite character (just behind Snowball). We also see Pin's hubris slowly catching up to him. It sounds like the creators really wanted you to hate him for whatever reason, so there's that.
Challenge: The challenge is to cross a bridge. Honestly? It's not that bad. But the way they went about it wasn't all that great. They literally just had both bridges collapse because Snowball got mad. I appreciate the build-up from episode 1b, but they could have done it way better. But if I'm being completely honest here, I think they would have overhauled the script if they made the episode today. Either way, it's gonna lose points for just being a time-waster, as it leads up to yet another tie.
Losers: Like I said, it was a tie. But, due to the tie-breaking challenge, the Squishy Cherries lost. I'm already getting tired of this catch-all setup, but I don't think it's used in too many episodes after this.
Overall: I think this episode was okay at best. I like how they acknowledged Needle's cake at the start, and it was cool to see the wind go haywire due to the cake. But I'm gonna give it a D-tier rating. Same shtick as last episode, done worse.
Day 4 of reviewing BFDI episodes until Silksong comes out: S1 E4 "Sweet Tooth" There's a 0.629% chance that Silksong will come out tomorrow, and growing!
Thoughts—
This episode was a fun one, and I really liked it. The only thing is... where was the music!? Maybe it was part of the April Fool's prank, similar to the beginning of the episode faking a cancellation, but either way, that takes the episode down a few pegs.
Cake at Stake: This CAS was pretty good, all things considered. It had some funny jokes and bits, and overall, I think it was done well. The elimination of Blocky so early is a bit sad but deserved. We never really got to know his character until later in the series, so it's something that was bound to happen.
Challenge: Today's challenge was to bake a cake. Honestly, not that creative, but incredibly well done. The entire thing was held back by, as I mentioned earlier, the lack of music, but it was otherwise pretty good. Somehow, it didn't turn out as boring as I thought it would.
If I'm being honest, not a lot happens except for Coiny being confirmed to be a penny, or Leafy potentially faking his friendliness, so that doesn't fare well for the episode. I think they knew that there wasn't much to do with this challenge idea, hence why there's a time skip to the end of the challenge. Not much to say, really.
However, I do have to give credit to Snowball's line mid-episode: "Making cakes without recipes is almost as bad as making a cake out of TWO METAL BALLS!" It's absolutely Snowball-esque to say that, and I'm glad we got that line. It's hilarious.
Losers: It ended up being a tie, but then it was a double tie from the chocolate balls eating contest. So, they had to break neckties for a second tiebreaker. It was kinda funny, but the situation will happen a second time in the series. Self-referential humor isn't always funny, and this is treading the line between funny and unfunny; good the first time, bad the second, awful the third. Either way, the Squishy Cherries lost, making the teams even again.
Overall: A pretty mid episode, all things considered. Straight out of the water, I'm giving it a C-tier rating. It had some hilarious lines, but that was pretty much the only thing holding it up. Need I say more?
Day 3 of reviewing BFDI episodes until Silksong comes out: S1 E3 "Are You Smarter Than A Snowball?" There's a 0.625% chance that Silksong will release tomorrow, and growing!
Thoughts—
This episode was pretty good. We got right into the action and there wasn't really anything else in the way. Well, other than...
Cake At Stake: There were a couple of good bits here, but nothing that made me laugh too much. Though the thing with Woody constantly being afraid he'll be eliminated, only for Spongey to be shown leaving the series in the end, was a nice touch.
Challenge: The challenge today is a test, and it sets up some great ideas that are used effectively! I don't think I even have to mention mini Pencil and "Just drew a little doodle!" These are iconic, and likely to intrigue new viewers even today. Jacknjellify really knew what they were doing, even when they were new to the craft back then.
Not all that much happens, but that's to be expected from a challenge both at the start of the show and with not that much in terms of nuance. I'm sure that in later seasons, this episode would have been extended frivolously with lore and character development, but as of now, it's good enough. Although, something I will comment on is Blocky stealing the test answers, which causes their loss in the end.
Losers: The Squishy Cherries lose this one, and it's fitting. After the Squashy Grapes lost two teammates in a row, it was only natural for the other team to suffer a loss today.
Overall: It was a nice episode, but it has almost nothing in terms of story progression other than the next elimination. I can see how it could have been improved, but even still, they did everything they could do with what they had and what they knew. I'll give it a B-tier rating, but only because it could have definitely done better. Otherwise, it would have gotten a C or lower.
Episode start: This is where we get out first Cake At Stake scene! This was probably one of the most potent ways of community engagement, especially considering it was a webshow made by people who wanted to make their own cool thing! I'd gush over the concept of CAS more, but I don't want to run out of space. The Win Token is very well explained, but its potential isn't really used very well in future episodes. Overall, a neat little item that is remembered but not used. The jokes here, such as "Sit," where the announcer states the word and all the Squashy Grapes sit, as well as "TLC," which is a term that isn't explained upon until later, are very funny. The elimination of Flower was iconic, especially with the Announcer Crusher. But overall, not much to say.
Challenge: A lot happens in today's challenge (Obstacle Course), so I'll go over the notable parts.
Pencil is funny, spouting iconic lines such as "Now let's go, super fast!" And "Oh no, I've been dulled!" They're poignant and well delivered. Honestly, if I had to pick a favorite character upon watching this series today, I'd probably pick Pencil. The constant scenes of Needle being hit off the climbing wall is hilarious, and I liked it a lot. The Blocky subplot, where contestants have to find Blocky after he supposedly died, is a bit distracting. The idea in isolation is well executed, but it just takes away from the overall experience. #alliance4life Firey is hot. Enough said. The Leafy and Icy scene is well executed, and I think it serves the show and tells viewers what's to come. At the section where contestants must find needles in a haystack is incredibly well done. Needle scans herself and Firey just burns the haystack after initially searching manually, showing his one-track mind, is funny. Teardrop having to actually search through the haystack is also pretty good, and it cements the challenge in favor of the Squishy Cherries when she passes the test, who get another win over the already weakened team. This is due to Firey being useless when around water, since the final part of the obstacle course is to pour water into your team's barrel. He gets better as the show goes on, but it's his ultimate weakness in the beginning.
Losing team: Squashy Grapes lose yet again, having yet more pushing power taken away from them. It's a bit one-sided, but I think the Squishy Cherries lose the next one (Spoilers!!!), so it's fine.
Overall:
This episode was pretty good. It had a pretty significant jump in quality compared to the last, and I think it's honestly one of the best introductions to the entire series. However, it can't stand alone. Episode 1 does most of the context work, but if you get the idea, episode 2 is where to start.
I loved this episode, and it could probably stand on its own if you didn't have to watch episode 1 a/b. I'll give it an S-tier rating, but just barely. It still does some things I consider as not that well, but it also does other things incredibly well! It's a good episode and it serves its purpose.
Day 1 of Ranking a BFDI Episode Every Day Until Silksong Comes Out!
How this series will work: Each day between 5-7 pm EST, I will share my thoughts on BFDI episodes, from 1a/b all the way to the newest episode of BFDIA! At the end, I will rank them from F to SS tier in quality based on a mix of my personal views and objective reasoning. This will continue until Hollow Knight: Silksong releases. I'm pretty confident it will come out this year, but there's always something that could delay it!
BFDI 1a/b Thoughts: Episode one is a classic—truly a relic of the early 2010s. It was many people's introduction to the series, whether they stayed for it or not. It has some pretty choppy animation, voice acting, and direction, but that's to be expected from a couple of kids just wanting to make their own Total Drama Island.
However, there are a few things I've always wanted to comment on. The drama between Needle and Snowball feels forced, and it mostly serves to explain why Snowball is so angry all the time. Additionally, the constant zooming in on mouths to create tense moments gets old quickly. I understand what they were going for, and it's clear they've improved a lot since then, but it's still worth mentioning.
Overall, I'd give this episode an A-tier rating. It's the first episode and introduces the viewer to all the characters we need to know. The announcer's sudden appearance is something I actually like, as it gives the show a distinctive 2010s personality. It would be higher, but there’s just too much they were trying to achieve at this stage.
