Math Mini-Lessons

Anyone can be a Math Marvel!
In 2012, I started this channel to help my students with their math homework. Years later I noticed people kept watching! Math Mini-Lessons is here to answer math questions for children (and adults). On this math channel I break down math concepts and skills to for everyday kids and parents. We explore various Common Core strategies and math models to show kids how these methods work and connect to more traditional math models. I specialize in middle school and elementary school math and show how these concepts connect to high school Algebra and Geometry.

✏️ To All the Teachers—Thank You.
Teaching is more than a profession.
It’s a calling, a responsibility, and—at times—a quiet act of courage.

This week, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, but the truth is: one week will never be enough to recognize all that teachers do.

You are entrusted with the learning, development, and safety of children every single day. That’s no small thing—and it’s never lost on us.

Many of us entered this work because we fell in love with our discipline and wanted students to feel that same spark of joy, success, or confidence. Others answered the call because a teacher changed our lives—and we knew we had to do the same for someone else.

So today, and every day, we say:

Thank you for the early mornings and late nights.
Thank you for the planning, the grading, the checking in.
Thank you for showing up—on hard days, tired days, and in-between days.
Thank you for believing in every child, even when the world makes that hard.

We would not be where we are without teachers.
And we see you.

I’ve never met a parent who doesn’t want their child to succeed in school. Even the most challenging or disengaged parents want the best for their kids—but sometimes, they just don’t know how to help.

Back in 2013, I saw this struggle firsthand. My 5th-grade students were either turning in homework full of mistakes or skipping it altogether. When I asked why, the answer was consistent:
❌ “I forgot how we did it in class.”
❌ “No one at home knows how to help me.”
❌ “My parents say, ‘You're the one in school, I don’t know how they taught you.’”

Even my principal dismissed homework as ineffective because it relied on parental support, which wasn’t guaranteed. But instead of giving up, I decided to change the approach.

💡 Enter YouTube.

I recorded a simple video on my phone, walking through the first two problems on the homework. The rule was: Every student had to copy those first two problems, then try the rest on their own. I also shared the videos with parents.

The result?
✅ Homework completion skyrocketed to over 80%!
✅ Students rewatched lessons when they needed help.
✅ Parents finally had a way to support their child’s learning.

Fast forward 12 years—today, I have nearly 600 math videos on YouTube, making math more accessible for students, teachers, and families. Schools I work with now use these videos in multiple ways:
🔹 Teachers assign them for homework, so students come to class with prior knowledge.
🔹 Parents use them to guide their kids through tough topics.
🔹 Students revisit them whenever they need extra help.

YouTube has transformed how we bridge the gap between school and home, creating a partnership in learning.

💭 How else can we work with families to make math more accessible for students? Let’s keep the conversation going!

A Farewell to a Fellow Feathered Educator: A Eulogy for Duo the Duolingo Owl

Friends, linguists, mathletes, lend me your ears (and your test scores). Today, we gather not to solve for x but to mourn the passing of a legend—the one, the only, Duo the Duolingo Owl.

Duo and I may have flown in different circles—he, a relentless guardian of forgotten Spanish lessons, I, a champion of middle school math mastery—but we were both birds of a scholarly feather. While I gently guide students to math proficiency with engaging, evidence-based methods, Duo pursued his students with an urgency that bordered on threatening.

He never accepted “mañana” as an excuse. He waited, he reminded, he haunted—but in the end, he only wanted what I want: for students to succeed. Unlike me, however, he may have perished waiting for someone to finally complete their streak.

Duo’s passing leaves a void in the world of education, a lesson unreviewed, a push notification unanswered. But let us not grieve—let us honor his memory the best way we know how: by practicing what we preach. Do your lessons. Do your math. And for the love of all things logical, don’t make Winston come after you next.

Rest in peace, Duo. Your work is infinite, but you are gone too soon.

📢 Why is it better to keep up in math than have to catch up? 🤔💡

Imagine you’re building a LEGO tower. 🏗️ Every day, you add a few bricks. If you stay on track, your tower grows taller and stronger. But what if you stop building for a while? When you come back, you don’t just have to add today’s bricks—you have to go back and build everything you missed! 😵

Math is the same way. Each new skill is like another brick in your tower. If you keep up, learning feels smoother and easier. But if you fall behind, catching up can feel like trying to build a whole tower all at once—and that can be really frustrating! 😟

✅ Keeping up = easier, less stressful, and more fun!
❌ Catching up = extra work, more pressure, and a bigger challenge.

So, even if math feels tricky sometimes, it’s always better to ask questions, practice a little every day, and keep stacking those knowledge bricks! You’ve got this! 💪🔢✨

I remember teaching 4th graders the roots for polygons, tri (3), quad (4) sept (7), Oct (8) Non (9) Dec (10) and asked my favorite math question, "What do you see, what do you notice?"

My 4th graders instantly made the connection to the months on the calendar. They wanted to know why the roots didn't match the order of the months on the calendar. I love when kids ask questions like this because we get to have great discussions. There is a reason why the order changed and you can check out our YouTube Channel to learn more.
