I made a video on 🌿 #CBD & #skincare 🌿… it has been hanging around for a while, but I am finally releasing it tomorrow (10/17)! 🙌🙌🙌

As you can see from the pic below, I might have gotten a *little* carried away while making it.😁

Why is sunscreen so darn confusing? Roughly half the questions I get from y’all are about sunscreen 🧴, so clearly everyone has things they want to know! Come learn about how clickbait headlines, quickly evolving sunscreen technology, and a boatload of new regulations, are all a recipe for confusion😕.

☀️ I’ll be presenting the topic *** Consumer Misperceptions About Sunscreen*** January 29th from 4-8pm in New Jersey with NYSCC. FIND EVENT RIGHT HERE ----> www.eventbrite.com/e/an-update-on-fda-new-proposed…
If you’re washing your hair on Wednesday night, FUGGEDABOUTIT! Come hang out with me instead! There will be peeps from the FDA, scientists, and some rando vlogger called Ms. Beautyphile 😉 - and we will all be talking about sunscreen. You’ll walk out more knowledgeable than you came in!

🌎 Cradle to Cradle means a product can be repurposed in a never-ending cycle. Today, most of the products that we think of as “recycled” are actually “downcycled”. This means the product is mixed with other materials in a way that reduces the quality or only allows us to recover a small fraction of the natural resources used to make it. For example, some plastics are mixed together when recycled, producing a hybrid plastic of lower quality that has fewer potential uses.

Because most of the products we produce are not designed with recycling in mind, many natural resources end up on a journey from “cradle to grave”.  According to some estimates, about 90% of the materials we use become waste almost immediately.

Cradle To Cradle is a design approach that gets companies to consider design issues before they create the product. To eliminate waste, the product, packaging, and manufacturing all need to be examined from the very beginning. The Cradle to Cradle Certification looks at the impact of a product’s ingredients/materials, potential health issues, energy and carbon demands, water conservation, and even social fairness, then asks how each of these aspects could be improved.  Cradle To Cradle tries to mimic nature’s regenerative cycle where nothing goes to waste. I learned about the Cradle To Cradle certification at in-cosmetics and hope that more beauty brands will begin to incorporate these principles into future products. 🧴

⭐ Stress and Acne: Part 2⭐

Here’s something that might blow your mind. 🤯 Your brain communicates with your skin, and when you experience stress, one of the negative outcomes can be acne. It starts with the hypothalamus at the base of the brain, which responds to stress by producing a hormone called Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (abbreviated CRH).

CRH nudges the pituitary (we’re still in the brain here), and says “Hey Bro, we need some corticotropin, stat”. Corticotropin is also known as ACTH, and it moves rapidly through the bloodstream to the adrenal gland, found right above the kidneys. (Fun Fact: The word adrenal is from the Latin root ad- "at or near," and renes, "kidneys."). The adrenal cortex gets busy, unleashing about 30 different hormones to get the body prepared to deal  with a serious threat -- like ninja kittens. 😉

Some of the hormones include epinephrine (also known as adrenaline), norepinephrine and cortisol, a key stress hormone. These hormones can help us when we feel we’re in danger, but they do so at a price!

They minimize non-time-critical body operations like reproduction and digestion. Chronic stress also weakens the immune system, allowing the otherwise harmless Propionibacterium acnes 🦠 to overpopulate and disrupt skin. Even wound healing becomes impaired, and you know that can’t be good! It’s sort of a recipe for a skin-pocalypse. 😨

Pre-cortisol CRH ramps up sebum production in the sebaceous glands, swelling pores. Neuropeptides released by the nervous system activate an inflammatory response - and those zits start to look angry! And bad news for dudes, increased levels of testosterone pump up the activity of the sebaceous glands, making a bad problem even worse. Oh, joy! Just in time for the holiday party 🎄

⭐ Stress and Acne: Part 1⭐

I want to thank everyone who wrote me a DM saying they enjoyed the In-Cosmetics NYC video with Doctor Claudia on stress and acne. Now, I just wanted to put some things into context. A little stress is good for us.

Stress is our brain telling our body to prepare for danger… That’s a good thing. If you piss mom off and she has a chancla in her hand, you’d better run like your life depends on it. Córrele! (For those of you not in the know, it’s the Mexican equivalent of RUN LIKE HELL).

Here’s how your body responds and gets you ready to“fight or flight” from mom...or other dangerous creatures👺👻🐅. It starts by releasing hormones like epinephrine, basically an adrenaline rush, and also norepinephrine. Our heart starts to beat rapidly, oxygen is re-routed to the brain, helping us think clearer and faster, our pupils dilate to improve our vision, and the levels of sugar increase in our blood so our muscles can spring into action! You exhibit superhuman strength and reflexes, deflecting that chancla right before it hits you in the face! See! An acute stress response CAN be good for you!

But all of this takes A LOT of resources. Your body handles this by slowing non-critical body functions like digestion, wound healing, reproduction and even your immune system🦠. These side effects are not harmful if they continue for a few minutes or hours, but if the stress persists for weeks or months, it begins to wreak havoc on your body and skin.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. 😄 I needed to take some time off the last couple weeks to be with family. I appreciate everyone's patience while I was away from the computer. Your support makes me feel very emotional... like a mom at a wedding 😹😹😹 From time to time, I still may need to take time out to be present for some real-life things, but I will try to limit this as much as possible. Thanks for being there. This week and next, I plan to re-post some of the in-cosmetics live streams you may have missed, and also some of my own msbeautyphile vids!!! Can't wait to turn on the water hose and get things flowing again!

You should totally check out this video, not that I am biased or anything 😉 (hint: watch the end credits)

I’ve been a fan of‪@Seeker‬ for YEARS, but this is the very first script I’ve written with them. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to work with this tremendously talented team and I'm looking forward to extending my #scicomm skills into other fantastic topics.

🤓 There was a lot of research that went into this episode and each step in the process reminded me of the environmental impact of our plastics usage🌎. I was also inspired by The Ocean Cleanup Team and their young CEO Boyan Slat, who is ambitious enough to attempt solving this enormous problem facing humanity.

Do you think The Ocean Cleanup’s Solution will work? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Yes, it’s important for our skincare to function the way we’d expect, but it’s also important that it feel good on skin. Personally, I can’t stand greasy hand lotions because they grease up my keyboard and some people will never buy a sticky sunscreen no matter how effective it is. If we don’t like the way a skincare product feels, we’re not going to buy it! The sensory aspect of skincare is so important, that there is an entire science behind it! Sensory evaluation measures, analyzes, and interpret our responses to the way a product looks and feels.

At in-cosmetics I met Mark Chandler from ACT Solutions Corp. He shared some stages where we can evaluate the sensory characteristics of our skincare products.

📌Appearance - This refers to the visual characteristics of the product while still in the jar. Two key factors that influence appearance:
▪️Shape-  The ability of a product to retain its form (reflects the thickness of the product)
▪️Gloss - The amount of light reflected from a product.
📌 Pick-up - Describes the properties of the product when it’s manipulated between the fingers. There is:
▪️ Firmness - The force required to fully compress the product between the thumb and the forefinger.
▪️Stickiness - The amount of force required to separate fingers.
▪️Stringiness - The amount the product “strings” rather than breaks when fingers are separated.
📌 Rub-out - Involves the spreading of the lotion onto the skin. We often spread the lotion using small circular motions. The evaluation may involve factors like:
▪️Spreadability - Ease of moving the product over skin. Think of descriptors like slip (easy spread), glide (medium spread), and drag (difficult spread).
▪️Whitening - The degree a product turns white when rubbed
📌After-feel - The way the skin feels after application of the product.
▪️Residue (amount/type) - The amount of product left on skin and type  (waxy, greasy, silicone, powdery or chalky)
▪️Oiliness - The degree of how greasy/oily the skin feels 10 minutes after application.

This terminology can help us better describe our interactions with cosmetics products and improve our understanding of what cosmetic formulators and marketers are paying attention too when they create our products. I’ll post the video of Mark to YouTube as I get a chance.  In the future, I’d love to evaluate the properties of some skincare products in a vid. Would you be interested in that? Cheers!
