🌎 Cradle to Cradle means a product can be repurposed in a never-ending cycle. Today, most of the products that we think of as “recycled” are actually “downcycled”. This means the product is mixed with other materials in a way that reduces the quality or only allows us to recover a small fraction of the natural resources used to make it. For example, some plastics are mixed together when recycled, producing a hybrid plastic of lower quality that has fewer potential uses.

Because most of the products we produce are not designed with recycling in mind, many natural resources end up on a journey from “cradle to grave”.  According to some estimates, about 90% of the materials we use become waste almost immediately.

Cradle To Cradle is a design approach that gets companies to consider design issues before they create the product. To eliminate waste, the product, packaging, and manufacturing all need to be examined from the very beginning. The Cradle to Cradle Certification looks at the impact of a product’s ingredients/materials, potential health issues, energy and carbon demands, water conservation, and even social fairness, then asks how each of these aspects could be improved.  Cradle To Cradle tries to mimic nature’s regenerative cycle where nothing goes to waste. I learned about the Cradle To Cradle certification at in-cosmetics and hope that more beauty brands will begin to incorporate these principles into future products. 🧴
