Our family has been cultivating the beautiful life for over 15 years, growing our own food on our small farm, cooking delicious food, sharing our time & table with others, and celebrating the ordinary days we have been given to enjoy this life. On our table, we want food that will delight, nourish, and comfort. Much of what inspires us comes from our travels to Italy, we always come back changed and inspired by the community, the resourcefulness, and the food! Half-a-world away away, we’re bringing these lessons and flavors to our own kitchen table.

In typical fashion, years ago, I began to lament over the fact that having four children has changed my body in irreversible ways. Now scarred and… drooping?… I didn’t recognize the shapes I saw in the mirror. I feared Stuart wouldn’t either. In a particular moment of loss over that-version-of-myself, I came to Stuart and shared my feelings of loss over what was. A natural emotion, really, when one has given their body up for others. Stuart grabbed my hand and said.... more in today's new post (shaye.substack.com) 😘

I’ll be blunt. I’ve been pretty hard on myself this past year. I’ve felt wasteful and insufficient in my work as homemaker. I’ve struggled deeply with feeling like I’m not doing a good enough job and tending to things well. Then, I was forced to take smaller steps. I realized that I am trying to manage too much. Asking too much of my daily-efforts. If we cease to be blessed by a blessing, then it’s a pretty good sign we have too much to manage well. Lots more (including solutions) in today's new (free) newsletter: shaye.substack.com/

When people ask me what I do for a living, for ease and simplicity, I tell them that I run an online cooking school. For six and a half years, we've run The Elliott Homestead Cooking Community which is just that - an online community where we create, instruct, and guide other home-cooks. I was recently asked, "Why bother? Can't people just Google any recipe they want?". Short answer: yes, of course. Everything is accessible and free with the Great Google. But the longer answer is: no. In our community, we've created a quiet, safe, kind place for home-cooks to learn, ask questions, and participate with others. There are no ads, no endless scrolling, no having to sub-out for whole-food ingredients. The community is accessible via an app on your phone for ease, but many of our members print out the recipes for a non-digital experience in the kitchen. There are instructional videos for each recipe with substitutions and techniques clearly demonstrated and presented. It is a quiet corner of the online-space where people are kind (thank you members for making this true!), you can ask questions, you won't be overwhelmed by the speed or amount of information, and you don't have wonder if the food is going to be good. Though we aren't a designated gluten-free or dairy-free community, many of our members are and there are always thoughtful substitutions and discussions on the table. It is such a delightful group of people and a piece of our work I am very proud to be a part of. If you're feeling the need to quiet the noise and tuck into such a place, you can join in now for a delicious Easter feast: theelliotthomestead.com/community ❤️See you there!

My brother-in-law Jordan can't sit still (right @elamandwillowsmom?). Neither can I. When I met Jordan almost 20 years ago, I was so glad to not be the only one 😂 Though Jordan's not a gardener, I find it to be the perfect hobby for someone like me. There's always work to do, always something to putz with. Unintentionally, our hands can fall into destructive habits like too much scrolling. Instead, there needs other be positive tasks at the ready: gardening, knitting, reading, ironing, etc. These tasks help quiet the mind of someone like me whose mind doesn't really ever stop. EVER. So this is me, lamenting that I can't garden right now, because my gardens are my therapist 😂

We're entering into a very exciting month here on the homestead - lambing month! We still have two sheep from our original Katahdin herd, a hair-sheep (no shearing required) known for its meat production. They're very old now, but still with us. Last year, we also welcomed two new dairy ewes onto the farm and subsequently kept three of their daughters. That means we've got seven ewes in total to keep eyes on - five of those have bellies and bits hidden under huge wool coats! After twelve years of having sheep, it's always still a bit of an adventure. The girls do also get a winter supplement of grain to keep them plump and happy during their pregnancies. In our harsh, Northern winters, it's a welcomed addition to their diet. (Photographed is Will and Pepper.) Can't wait to meet the new little ones!
