The Cantormortis is a highly exceptional creature. It is so far the only amphibian we've discovered in The World Below that is capable of flight. They live in and around lakes, rivers and swamps, they are just as good at swimming as they are flight, we've even witnessed them erupting out of the water, spreading their wings, and taking flight in one seamless attempt. They can fly for several miles before having to return to the water to rehydrate.
The nickname we've given is 'Death Singers" due to their haunting cries sounding like as if they're singing. These creatures also seemingly have a taste for human flesh. Along with their ability to fly, another unique ability they possess is their ability to mimic the cries of other animals, including humans. Any expeditions near their territory require us to stay in contact with eachother to assure we do not get lured into a trap by one or two Cantormortis.
Once they have lured their prey where they wanted them, they strike either from above, or from the water, quickly taking their prey under to drown. They are a rare sight, but we aren't sure if it's due to their elusive nature or if their numbers are decreasing
The Loricatherium is a creature of dubious origin. We believe it is a therapsid of some kind whose ancestors may go back as the Late Triassic based on the genetic material we've gathered and studied. Out of all the giant predators in The World Below, the Loricatherium is one we fear the most. Its body is covered in thick osteoderms that make bullets bounce off it. They are extremely aggressive and territorial and when provoked or enraged, they go absolutely berserk to the point running is the only option. All encounters with these creatures have resulted in several mass casualties to where we had to change our map routes in an attempt to avoid them.
Loricatherium are by far one the dominant apex predators in The World Below. Smaller predators run when they hear their call, which can be heard miles away. They do not back down from challenges from other predators that dare challenge them, or their own kind in most cases. They fight using their powerful jaws and swiping with their claws which can rend flesh and or break bones with ease.
Loricatherium are ambush predators that go after large game, ranging from bison, rhinos, giant sloths, and occasionally mammoths. Loricatherium will sometimes hunt in pairs to better increase their odds of a successful hunt, tho in most cases they are solitary hunters.
Their population seems to be dwindling for some strange reason, we haven't figured out why.
Magnanatosuchus is an enormous species of bipedal crocodilian that resides in lakes, marshes and swamps in The World Below. It is an omnivore in nature, feeding on fish and underwater vegetation, its preferred prey are large crustaceans and mollusks at the bottom of lakes. Capable of holding its breath for several hours, it's capable of diving several hundred feet to find its prey. Its teeth are very rounded and blunt, optimal for crushing hard bodied prey.
Its large size and bulky build make it intimidating to most predators. When threatened, it lets out deep growls and bellows or may simply retreat into deeper water where predators can't follow. Demeanor wise, they are rather docile, tho it is unadvised to get too close to them. They spend most of their time in water, though it will actively come on land to eat things such as fruits.
We don't have much data on this species as it is very elusive and seemingly has a low population.
The Coyote-Bat is simply a large species of bat whose appearance resembles coyotes on the surface, which is just a mere case of Convergent Evolution. With few aerial predators, they simply took up the niche as one. They are primarily carnivorous but have been seen eating things such as fruits and nuts. They not only resemble coyotes but have similar hunting techniques to them as well. Coyote-Bats are very social in nature and are rarely alone. They hunt smaller animals by flying them down in packs to exhaustion, landing to finish them off with their fangs. Coyote-Bats are also scavengers, being able to smell rotting flesh miles away.
They are amazingly intelligent. Several that were attracted to garbage from the base have been tamed and even taught to do tricks and occasionally bring "gifts", usually something like a rock or a half-eaten carcass. We have six that regularly visit the base, expecting to be fed. The ones we have are named after Greek/Roman characters. Their names are Athena, Apollo, Perseus, Heracles, Hades and Persephone. They don't hurt anyone and even alert us if a predator is nearby and even try to fend it off. Their keen sense of hearing, smell and sight allow them to detect one before sentries can.
Coyote-Bats have a bitter rivalry with Bane Wolves, a common predator in The World Below. Fights between the two are common, although Coyote-Bats often have the advantage most of the time due to being able to fly.
Coyote-Bats are very common to see flying in the skies of The World Below, their population is thriving
The Ravager Skunk is a massive species of Mustelid that seems to share close relations with modern Skunks on the surface. One of its most noteworthy features is its terrifying hyper aggression and lack of fear. We've witnessed these things steal kills from predators two, even three times its size and even chase them off. Its attitude reminds me a lot of Honey Badgers, which I've never met in person, but used to see on animal documentaries I watched with my nephew. This thing seems to be near indestructible. Like honey badgers, it has a thick hide that protects it from cuts and lacerations from attackers, as well as bullet rounds. Its bones are amazingly dense that allows to survive trauma that would kill other creatures in its size range. One instance was it getting up and walking off a swipe from a fully grown Bear Sloth after a confrontation, it has an amazing pain tolerance. Lastly, like skunks, it can spray a horrifically foul spray from its rear from glands, it can even spray it from under its armpits as well. It smells so bad, the samples we gathered were used to make "stink bombs" we use in the event of a predator attack
We've had many bad encounters with this thing. From one raiding our trash and waste, mauling workers, to a couple of them eating the captured assets for study, tearing thick metal cables like chicken wire. Their jaws are stupidly powerful, easily comparable or stronger than a Hyena's, animals which can crush the leg bones of a rhinoceros. This thing just massacres anything it gets it hands and teeth on, hence the name we gave it. They're extremely clever and capable of solving problems, as if being near impervious to pain and being able to shrug off blows fatal to other animals wasn't enough.
God I hope there aren't many of these things, it would be chaos if a population established itself on the surface
The Mega-Horned Rhino is what appears to be a gargantuan rhinoceros, possibly descendants of the Woolly Rhino that crossed a land bridge to America, so much to be uncovered with this one. From the researched gathered behavior wise, they aren't much different than modern day rhinos. They prefer to live solitary lives, or at the most in small groups, usually made of calves, mothers, and a single bull. Both sexes possess a massive horn that's over 10ft tall in height. This horn is most definitely used in combat, but for many predators and adversaries alike, just seeing that horn is enough to stop an attack. Their fur is almost similar to Velvet in texture due to how fine it is, it's unsure why the Mega-Horned Rhino kept traces of its fur, instead of fully losing it all like the "Not so Woolly Mammoths" (I know Nick was the one who came up with that stupid name, when I see him again...). That aside, Mammoths are one of the many herbivores the rhino happily coexists with, though other animals give it a wide girth as it is prone to charging when startled.
Small bats, flying reptiles and the few birds in The World Below will "Clean" the rhino's beard, ridding it of any parasites such as ticks. Another bizarre trait with the Mega-Horned Rhino is the pair of tusks on its bottom jaw. My hypothesis is that they're used in interspecies combat or possibly display as well. Although it stands taller than an African Elephant, it's still preyed upon, specifically The Loricatherium. Unlike rhinos on the surface world who face near extinction, Mega Horned Rhinos have a very stable population in The World Below.
Leosaurus is a large carnivorous reptile that resides in the forests, jungles, and grasslands of The World Below. They display sexual dimorphism in which males are much larger and muscular, possessing a bright red head, while females are typically smaller, slimmer, and have a more yellowish-orange head. Leosaurs are unique in which they are very social for reptiles and possess complex pack hunting strategies. Their hunting methods are similar to animals such as lions, where females chase after prey, while males ambush the prey being chased into kil zones by females. Groups of Leosaurs consist of typically one or two males, and the rest females and young. Young Leosaurs after hatching will trail behind the adults and scavenge their kills. Once mature, male Leosaurs will often leave and look for their own territories, while females may stay with the group. Other males may try to take over, in which the lead male or males will attempt to fight off the intruding male. If the rival wins, the loosing male retreats and the rival will take over, killing as many of the previous male's offspring as he can and breeding with the females. Leosaurs are fairly common predators in The World Below
The Hook-Hand Sloth is a massive species of ground sloth that resides in The World Below. Named for the single digit on each of its arms, it uses these to bring down vegetation from tall trees, it also uses these for tearing open trees and rotting wood to feed on grubs and other insects hiding in them, slurping them up with its long tongue. Its claws are also used for defense, in which it'll swing them wildly, maiming anything they hit. Unprovoked, they are placid in nature. They live alone or in small groups and their preferred habitats are typically open grasslands, forests and jungles. Due to their large size, they do not have many predators. When confronted by one, it will stand its ground and attempt to fend it off . The Hook-Hand Sloth is a common sight in The World Below and seems to be thriving
