Make time for projects where the outcome does not matter. You don't always have to do art that involves learning or growth. Have projects where you just follow your creativity and curiosity.
It's not always about making progress or levelling up. These matter, but they're not everything. Spend time just making art and see where it goes. Experiment, play, and have some fun!
Muh notes (from the featured video and my own): - it's not the "main thing" actually - the "substance" is what really matters at the core (ex. story) - your "style" is simply an efficient way for you to actualize the "substance" (You don't have to worry about which colors to pick because you pretty much have a certain set of colors that you go for.) - it's a system of your best practices in art (tools, techniques, programs, approaches, mindsets, theories, etc.) - your style takes away or solves the huge list of small decisions so you can focus more on the big ideas/decisions/concepts - "Style is the perfect setting for that substance to be cultivated. Why? Because style is efficient." (Creative Pep Talk)
Signs to looks out for when finding/developing your style:
- it's fun to do. The process is enjoyable. You're not punishing yourself to just "finish" your art.
- looks good to YOU in the end. "Not bad" is good enough. You can set your standards higher if need be.
- gets your ideas out in a timely manner that make sense to you or for the kind of work you do.
Some notes: - Perfectionism is not "real." It's always moving and changing. - Don't let perfection control you. Work with it.
- Let perfection influence you more on small specific goals rather than bigger goals. - Doesn't disappear as you you get better. It grows with you. - Perfection is a reflection of your high standards. - Perfection (eventually, as you grow) encourages you to always improve.
Here's some notes and tips on why and how to approach warm-ups:
On the why of warm-ups: - Gives you room for error before jumping in to your main session - Helps get you "ready" before your main art session - Helps get out messy movements from your hand - Helps get out the "wonky" sketches - Solves Art Block (there are exceptions) - Gives you the opportunity to lay around with tools and materials - You can try out your new pens, pencils, markers, and brushes!
On what to draw/sketch: - Draw something that brings you joy - Draw something you know how to draw (confidence) - Draw more loosely or gestural
On using references: - It's okay to use some reference even for warm-ups - You don't have to rely on just one reference - You can have a bunch and mix-and-match them in your sketches
Package finally arrived earlier today! I recently bought the XPPEN Artist 22 (Gen 2) and so far it looks and feels great. Honestly, it's the best purchase I've made out of all the XPPEN tablets I've bought. It's not as recent like the Artist 22 Plus but it still feels wonderful to use.
I'll do an unboxing and talk more about it soon in the product review series.

Insightful post by Jesper Ejsing! Might help some of you in your art plans for the incoming 2025 New Year.
www.muddycolors.com/2024/11/be-loose-be-bold-and-b…
1. Be Loose
- You don't have to render every single thing equally.
- Saves more time but also helps with more impact (focus).
2. Be Bold
- Stop playing safe. Take more risks. Go for it.
- Go a little crazy. Exaggerate. Play around.
3. Be Yourself
- Do more personal pieces.
- Show yourself more in your work.
