And I see it all the time as a physical therapist and trainer
When your lifestyle is unhealthy, you can โget awayโ with it for a time
But eventually, it will catch up with you
It will become something you can no longer ignore
One day, it becomes obvious
One day, it forces you to make a decision about how you want to live the rest of your life
Contrary to what you may believe or have been told, it IS possible to stay in great shape and feel great as you age
It just requires a lot more effort, consistency, and discipline
The problem is that most people live unhealthy lifestyles that they can get away with in their teens, 20s, and (possibly) 30sโฆ
And then when it finally catches up with them and the negative effects are more obvious, they think:
โWell I guess this is what getting older feels like.โ
Well yesโฆ
But also no
Yes, aging makes things harder
Nobody is saying it isn't
If you're living a healthy lifestyle in your 20s and living the same healthy lifestyle in your 40s, although you may still feel great, you won't feel as good as you did in your 20s
But you'll still be feeling pretty damn good!
However, if you aren't taking care of yourself in your 20s and you continue on the same path, the negative effects of a compounding unhealthy lifestyle will eventually hit you like a ton of bricks
It will suck
And you'll probably assume it's โjust because I'm getting olderโ
Well, it's not โjust becauseโ of that
You have more control of how you feel and how you live than you think
And it's not too late to do something about it

It's no secret that it's much easier to become frail, weak, and handicapped as we age
And although we will all experience the detrimental effects of aging, we can still do something about it!
Resistance training (lifting weight, bodyweight exercises that are challenging, using band/cable resistance, etc) isn't just for athletes and bodybuilders
It's for anyone who wants to improve physical function and maintain a physically independent lifestyle throughout life! (in addition to all of the cognitive benefits it provides)
It's not easy or always enjoyable for everyone, but simply investing 20+ minutes, 2-3 days per week can help keep you living life on your terms instead of relying on others (family, friends, nursing home) to take care of you as you get into your later years
Stay active
Stay strong
Keep moving!

Literally everyday I have to help people "unlearn" much of what they've been told by other "professionals" or read/watched online
I hate that it's this way, but unfortunately a huge part of the problem of living in this "information" age is that literally anyone can spew theory as fact or consistently preach outdated thoughts/beliefs, many of which can actually keep the learner (you guys!) from actually improving or understanding things better...
...and in some cases hold you back from actually getting better due to the harmful beliefs or fears that are produced as a result
Much of this poor information has actually been disproven, but a lot of it just doesn't have enough scientific research available to hold strong opinions or beliefs about
I can't go into all of this in one short social media post, but here are a few examples you might have heard or been affected by before:
- You should never let your spine round if you have a herniated disc
- It's bad for your knees to pass your toes when you squat
- If you have "poor" posture, you will develop pain
- If you have a rotator cuff tear, you need surgery or else it won't get better
- You shouldn't let your knees bend more than 90 degrees when you squat
- If you don't move with perfect form/technique, you will get injured
- You have a lot of "wear and tear" in your body, so you'll have to live with your pain
- Hearing crunching/popping/cracking in your joints means you have arthritis (or worsening arthritis)
- You shouldn't allow your spine to round when you lift things off of the ground
- Sitting is bad for you
Again, these are just a FEW examples, but the fact that it only took me about 30 seconds to think of all of these off the top of my head further highlights the problem
I (and many others in the field of musculoskeletal health) will continue to try our best to help dispel these myths/poor information to give our patients/clients the best and most up to date information that we can
And, as the science/data changes, we will have to accept that we must change our own beliefs and opinions over time as well
We won't always have all the answers, nor should we pretend to! ----- ๐ฏ If you need help putting together an ๐๐ก๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ฃ๐๐๐ก for your own training and/or rehabโฆ

And it's not too late to do something about it
But will you?

Hard to Swallow Pills
