So many people...

Have an extremely narrow understanding of the benefits of exercise

They assume that it’s solely for the purpose of trying to look good or to lose weight

And when you have this mindset, it’s easy to skip workouts and become disengaged over time if you aren’t seeing those results happen fast enough

But, in reality, there are so many other positive health benefits of exercise that have nothing to do with how you look!

Once you realize how much regularly exercising can do for your overall health and life, it’s hard to skip it because it’s TOO VALUABLE to stop!

Things don’t get EASIER as you age

We all know that.

It takes more planning…

More dedication…

More focus…

…to feel great and stay healthy the older we get

BUT

That doesn’t mean that we have to ACCEPT that everything is going to go downhill with each passing year

If you take care of yourself:

You exercise

You eat whole foods

You work to have a healthy social life

You foster your mental health

You prioritize quality sleep

…and so on

You can still feel GREAT into your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond

As much as I hear the “Just wait until…” from people older than I am

I also hear people saying “I feel better now than I did 20 years ago!”

Especially if they are actively working on their health now and didn’t prioritize it in the past

And yes, I know…

Some things are out of your control and come up in your later years

I’m not talking about those things

I’m talking about the things that ARE IN YOUR CONTROL

And there is a lot more that you can control than maybe you realize

You have ONE life

People see someone in great shape and assume they're “more disciplined” with their health, fitness, lifestyle, etc.

And in many cases this is true.

But, as I mentioned, discipline isn't something you can see.

If your life makes it extremely difficult to prioritize and stick with your health and fitness goals, that takes extreme discipline to stay on top of.

If your life provides less barriers to improve and maintain your health and fitness, less discipline is required.

So, again, although healthy and fit people often do have a lot of discipline, don't assume that they're MORE disciplined with their health just because they're in better shape.

There's more to it than that!

Most of us take for granted how blessed we are

How blessed we are to move without restriction

How blessed we are to move without pain

How blessed we are to have a capable body

But once that’s stripped away…

…whether it’s due to injury, disease, a gradual process, or the effects of aging…

It becomes obvious.

I know this because:

1. I’ve had my fair share of injuries in my life (low back, neck, shoulder, knees, elbow, wrist, hip, ankle, etc) and have experienced it firsthand

2. And I’ve worked with thousands of others who’ve come to the same realization when they are no longer able to function and feel well due to pain and injury

Kids are like little sponges

They learn extremely fast, take everything in, and their world is literally shaped by what and who they see, especially their parents

Having 2 young children of my own (3 and 4), it’s been crazy to see how much they pick up from me without me even being aware of it (both good and bad)

Seeing this happen in real time, as my own children develop, has highlighted how important it is for my wife and I to try to model behavior that will help them become good human beings as they grow up

Since I try to promote physical health as a physical therapist and coach/trainer, I can’t emphasize enough how valuable it is to set your kids up for a healthier lifestyle by modeling one yourself!

If you’re someone who already practices healthy habits and exercises regularly, try to incorporate your kids in some way (either just seeing you do it or participating in a safe and fun way)

If you’re someone who struggles yourself with this, sometimes realizing that making a change in your own health isn’t only for you, but also for your kids, can help push you enough to finally start following through and becoming more consistent in taking care of yourself

…especially because a lot of parents can be notoriously bad at managing or improving their own health because their so focused on taking care of their kids

Remember, if you take better care of YOURSELF, not only will you feel better and feel more able to be a better parent, but your kids will see you doing this, which will make it easier for them to take better care of themselves and live healthier lifestyles as they grow up
