One of the most compelling stories of early trauma (medical in nature) I’ve ever heard was the history of Ted Kaczynski, aka: The Unabomber. Watch for all the chilling details: https://youtu.be/tS6j0XVYpAc

I originally released this real-life story in November of 2018, but it’s such an important lesson in what NOT to do to our young that I had to re-share it. It’s a case study that I read years ago in Bruce Perry’s book, Born For Love: Why Empathy Is Essential – and Endangered. At the time, it stopped me dead in my tracks and made me say: I’ll bet no one saw that coming… https://youtu.be/rv9gF_1pZk0

Being able to follow our biological impulses is our birthright. 🧠👁️👣➡️

To build up solid regulation as an infant our biological needs must be honoured and respected.

When this happens, with an attuned caregiver (usually the mother), we start to build what is called self-regulation via co-regulation.

For example, when we are in some form of distress, we cry.

{Or in western terminology, we “fuss.”}

Maybe we are hungry…
Maybe our diaper is soiled…
Maybe our temperature is too hot or cold…
Maybe we don’t like the environment we are in (bright lights, toxic smells, angry and repressed people, etc.)...

All of this makes us cry and whimper (fuss) in an attempt to showcase that we need some help navigating this stressful, distressful, situation.

As we are attuned to, listened to, we get our needs met, and we come out of a survival stress situation.

This is the basis of solid parenting.

Sadly, for many, this never happened.

The solution?

Learn to follow, honour, and respect our biological needs as ADULTS.

Because we can’t go back to that time, but we CAN re-learn and re-teach this process as adults.

⬆️ This is a fundamental concept of my work and teachings.

It’s simple, but potent. Try it out for a few weeks and see what you notice…

Any writers here? Math nerds? Foodies who cook from scratch? What’s one thing that ALL these have in common?

No matter how masterful you might be, at one point you were a newbie and started with the basics.

When we begin to write, we start with our ABCs. For math, it’s our 123s. For cooking, it might be learning simple food combinations like ‘mirepoix’ (a classic starter for a lot of soups and stews).

Today’s video is like the ‘mirepoix’ of starting a nervous system practice!

I got a bit obsessed with Paul Hawken in 2007 when he released his book, called…

📗 ‘Blessed Unrest, How the Largest Social Movement in History Is Restoring Grace, Justice, and Beauty to the World.’

It was so good, so inspiring, and so hopeful!

Rather than pointing out all the bad things happening globally, he put focus on all the organizations doing good work to restore health back to the planet and the people.

If memory serves, this quote I’ve been carrying around with me since then is from that book.

I had a chance to see him speak in the Bay area back in 2009 and was a highlight of my adult life. His passion and pragmatism is similar to mine. Plus, as this quote demonstrates, he’s not afraid to crack a joke.

He focuses on environmental issues. I focus on biological (physiological) issues. I believe that quote holds true for both disciplines: We know exactly what needs to be done to heal humanity, and yet, we tend to wait for the disaster to strike before we act, and even then, we still might not move in the right direction.

Healing humanity really does start with each human becoming more regulated, whole, vital in life force energy, and most importantly free of old traumatic imprints that keep spinning us out into more chaos.

As Peter Levine has said, and I will repeat this over and over again: Human enlightenment will be reached when every single human has a regulated nervous system.

Seems like a massive feat, doesn’t it? I don’t feel it’s impossible, but it will require everyone to do their part in cleaning up their own mess so we stop the cycles of traumatic unresolved stress being flung into the world.

The good news, we know what works. I’ve seen this over and over again over the years.

This is my expertise, so if you are looking for advice, you are in the right place. 👏🎉

Irene.

PS - Here’s a recent Paul Hawken quote I found: “Regeneration is not just about bringing the earth back to life. It is, but it's also about bringing ourselves back to life, bringing our essence, our spirit, our sense of purpose back to life. It’s about bringing meaning to our lives.”

Yep, I still agree with him! 🙂

➡️ TWO STEPS that I suggest to start healing toxic shame & depression below:

1. Because healing starts with learning, I’ll suggest watching my vlog titled, “Understanding the difference between healthy & toxic shame, with Seth Lyon” to really ‘grok’ this distinction 👁️⬇️
I just reshared it on my YouTube channel, right here: https://youtu.be/1SN0MoWy_Z8

2. From here, I might suggest starting a nervous system practice of your own. The best way to do this is via my Drop-In Classes and/or 21 Day Nervous System Tune-Up. You can start either of these today at irenelyon.com 👈 (look under the Paid Programs & Live Events menus)

If you’re new to this entire world of nervous system health and healing—welcome, friend. 🤗

You may be wondering whether this work will heal/fix/change a certain ailment/diagnosis/illness/symptom/struggle. 🤔

Here’s the short answer…👇👇👇

Restoring regulation back to the nervous system can help, heal, and often reverse many of the chronic troubles that are usually deemed ‘genetic’ and a ‘life sentence.’

I explain why and offer a fuller list of the ‘things’ nervous system healing can help with on the ‘NEW HERE’ tab on my website. Here’s that link:

irenelyon.com/new-here

It’s where I suggest EVERYONE who’s new to this entire world of nervous system healing and health begins their journey. 👣👁️

To taking a small step toward nervous system health,

Irene & Team Lyon

PS - Elisabeth has just had a healthy baby, too! So, she has gone from bedridden and very sick, to being healthy, fit, AND a new mom. Congratulations, Elisabeth! ❤️🎉

While POTS may look like a circulatory ‘disease’ on the outside, what we know (through the somatic & nervous system lens) is:

There is an underlying dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) at play here.

In simple terms, fight, flight, freeze AND shutdown are cycling between each other in chaotic and often deleterious ways that make us unwell.

In the case of POTS, the heart rate spikes up (tachycardia), we get dizzy (blood isn’t getting to our brain), and we can’t transition quickly from position to position because the circulation can keep up with the demands of movement.

This is a result of the ANS not being in good function. This is a lack of nervous system regulation.

We also see this chaotic flipping between fight, flight, freeze AND shutdown in other chronic conditions like IBS, migraine headache, bladder troubles, severe PMS, and Raynaud’s (just to name a few).

At the end of the day, the nervous system wants good flow, aka: regulation, but when there’s this underlying dysregulation, aka: ‘stop/start’, ‘activate/collapse’ it can’t achieve that, try as it might.

📌TLDR; The good news is that we can shift this dysregulation! Watch my video, ‘Can healing the nervous system heal POTS?’ to learn more. I just reshared it here: https://youtu.be/zloHYHZIxK0 📺

To your nervous system health!

How do you heal dissociation?

First, it’s important to understand how and why this occurs…

The next step is to reverse engineer this survival response and start to reconnect (back to ourselves and the environment).

This is where a simple neurosensory practice like ORIENTING 👁️ can be such a powerful tool.

But there’s more to it than just looking around us; we also need to cultivate our internal awareness…

FOLLOWING IMPULSE 👣 is another important practice to engage with in the context of dissociation.

If we can start to catch some of these little things that are occurring, pause, feel our body, feel how we’re connected to the ground, listen, let it happen, and really acknowledge the biology that is our system…this is another step in the right direction of reconnecting to our sense of self.

MOVEMENT 🚶 is another key thing.
As Bessel van der Kolk says said, we need to work with the body, we need to get it moving…whether it’s through making sound, singing, sitting on a physioball… or going for a walk and getting the heart rate up a little bit, but not in a way that is disconnecting from the body.

It’s about being more rigorous with the movement, but really FEELING it, and at the same time, really connecting to the environment.
