Dear friends, it was July 29, 1990 when Michael Carbajal faced Muangchai Kittikasem, who came to Phoenix from Thailand to defend his IBF light flyweight championship. Carbajal methodically took apart the champion in front of an ABC national audience. In round 7, after a combination of punches left Kittikasem lying defenseless against the ropes, the referee stepped in and stopped the fight, making Carbajal the world champion for the first time in his career. Carbajal then became World champ four other times.
Dear friends, today June, 28 is the anniversary of the second match between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. The much anticipated fight took place in Paradise, Nevade but what we saw on the ring it was Hell happening. The then champion Holyfield and Tyson had met seven months before, when Mike was the WBA heavyweight titlist. The challenger won surprisingly with an 11th round TKO. Tyson complained about frequent headbutts by Holyfield so a rematch was guaranteed. On June 28, 1997 the two bitter enemies met again. And again Tyson was headbutted in the second round. Ref Mills Lane said the headbutting was no intentional. An enraged Tyson came out of his corner in the third round with no mouthpiece and, during a clinch, bit ferociously the right ear of Holyfield. Immediately the fight was stopped. Lane took time to decide what to do. The ring doctor decided the fight could continue but Tyson was penalized for his foul. During another clinch "Iron" Mike bit Holyfield left ear but the two continued fighting. After a replay of the action discovered the foul, Tyson was disqualified. After 35 minutes of pushing and shoving in the ring, announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. read the decision: "Ladies and gentlemen, this bout has been stopped at the end of round number three. The referee in charge, Mills Lane, disqualifies Mike Tyson for biting Evander Holyfield in both ears, the winner by way of disqualification and still the WBA Heavyweight Champion of the World, Evander 'the Real Deal' Holyfield!"
Dera friends, it was April 28, 1967 when Muhammad Ali—then the reigning heavyweight boxing champion—made a decision that would echo far beyond the ring. Standing in a military induction center in Houston, Texas, Ali refused to be drafted into the U.S. Army, citing religious and moral objections to the Vietnam War. As a result, on that same day, the New York State Athletic Commission suspended his boxing license and the World Boxing Association stripped him of his title. In June, Ali was convicted of draft evasion by a jury. An appeals court upheld the conviction, and the case eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court which, in the case of Clay v. United States, unanimously overturned the conviction. Ali did not fight from March 1967 to October 1970 when he met Jerry Quarry winning after three rounds after the opponent was cut. On June 28, 1971, the Supreme Court overturned Ali's draft evasion conviction.
Dear friends, it was April 29, 1956 when Rocky Marciano announced his retirement from boxing at a hotel press confernce in Manhattan, New York. "I am retiring because of my wife and [daughter] Mary Anne," Marciano said. "Actually I feel good. I still have some good fights left in me. My mother never did want me to fight. My decision [to retire] puts her very much at ease. My father always liked boxing but he's happy to see me quit." Marciano was 32 years old and the current heavyweight champion at the time. His record was a perfect 49-0. He will be remebered as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.
Dear friends, it was February 15, 1978 when Leon Spinks defeated champion Muhammad Ali for the Heavyweight World Title, it was one of the greatest upset in the history of boxing. At the time, Spinks was a lower ranked contender and the aging Ali had expected an easy fight, but he was out-boxed by Spinks, who did not tire throughout the bout and had Ali ready to fall in the last seconds of the fight. Spinks won by split decision the world heavyweight title in his eighth professional fight, the shortest span in history. In the rematch, a now-in-shape Ali rarely lost control, winning back his title by a unanimous fifteen-round decision. The victory over Ali was the peak of Spinks's career. He had another World title chance against Larry Homes but was defeated in three rounds. Spinks moved to Cruiserweight and met the WBA champ, Dwight Qawi who TKO'ed him in six rounds. Spinks' from then , became a sort of stepping stone for young fighters. He died February 5, 2021. He was 67.
Dear friends, it was November 8, 2008 when Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones jr. fought in the MSG ring. No real association belt was at stake but the "The Ring" Light Heavyweight World Title. Calzaghe was the former unbeat Suoer Middleweight World Champion while Joes was simple one of the greatest champions of his era, having won multiplke title in different weight categories. The fight did not start well for Calzaghe, who was knocked down in the first round. But in round seven Calzaghe opened a cut above Jones's left eye. Jones was clearly having difficulty as the blood completely impaired his vision. Calzaghe remained dominant and in control, something that was reflected in the judges' scorecards as he outclassed Jones. The fight continued all the way to the end of the twelfth round, when all three judges awarded Calzaghe the UD win by a wide margin, each scoring the fight 118-109. Few months afte the fight, Calzaghe retired from the ring while Jones kept fighting until 2023 winning Cruiser Weight World titles in fringe association.
