Dear friends, it was February 15, 1978 when Leon Spinks defeated champion Muhammad Ali for the Heavyweight World Title, it was one of the greatest upset in the history of boxing. At the time, Spinks was a lower ranked contender and the aging Ali had expected an easy fight, but he was out-boxed by Spinks, who did not tire throughout the bout and had Ali ready to fall in the last seconds of the fight. Spinks won by split decision the world heavyweight title in his eighth professional fight, the shortest span in history. In the rematch, a now-in-shape Ali rarely lost control, winning back his title by a unanimous fifteen-round decision. The victory over Ali was the peak of Spinks's career. He had another World title chance against Larry Homes but was defeated in three rounds. Spinks moved to Cruiserweight and met the WBA champ, Dwight Qawi who TKO'ed him in six rounds. Spinks' from then , became a sort of stepping stone for young fighters. He died February 5, 2021. He was 67.
