Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
I used to think the answer was control.
If I could just;
• stay on track
• stick to the plan
• not “fall off”
then I’d be fine.
But what I didn’t understand was this:
The harder I tried to control everything, the more my system pushed back.
Because underneath that need for control was a nervous system that didn’t feel safe.
So it would swing between holding everything together and then losing control completely.
That wasn’t failure.
That was a pattern.
👉 of trying to create safety.
Healing hasn’t been about controlling myself better. It’s been about helping my system
feel safe enough that it doesn’t need to swing
between extremes.
✨ If this resonates, you’re not alone 🤍

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
We often assume people are making decisions from a clear, rational place. But that’s not always how the brain works.
Our nervous system has different states, and each state changes how we think, feel, and respond.
When someone is regulated, they have access to:
• clear thinking
• perspective
• decision-making
But when the nervous system shifts into survival mode, fight, flight, or freeze, the thinking part of the brain starts to go offline. Decisions become faster, more reactive, and focused on immediate relief or safety.
This is what we mean by state-dependent behavior.
It’s not that someone doesn’t know better. It’s that, in that moment, their system is prioritizing survival.
This is why patterns can feel confusing from the outside. And it’s why understanding nervous system states matters when we’re talking about behavior, addiction, and change. Because if the state doesn’t shift, the behavior often won’t either.
This is something we explore further inside the Trauma & Addiction: Understanding & Supporting Recovery program through Insight Learning Institute.

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
Addiction isn’t the problem… it’s the solution your nervous system learned.
When you look at addiction through a trauma-informed lens, it starts to make more sense.
Because addiction isn’t random. It’s functional.
Your nervous system is always trying to bring you
back into some level of balance. When your system feels overwhelmed, unsafe, or dysregulated… it looks for relief.
And when something works — even temporarily —
your brain learns it as a solution and keeping going back to it. This is how patterns form.
Not because you’re choosing the behavior…
but because your system has learned:
👉 this helps me get through
From the outside, this can look like self-destruction. But inside the body…
👉 it’s regulation
Not because you’re broken…
👉 but because your system adapted
Healing isn’t just about stopping the behavior.
It’s about understanding what the behavior was doing for you…
When we begin to understand why the behavior is there and what it’s doing for the person… we can start to support the body in finding safer ways to feel okay.

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
Addiction is often framed as a failure of willpower.
But what if that’s not actually what’s happening?
What if addiction is not the problem…
but the strategy?
When we look at this through a trauma-informed lens, behavior starts to make more sense.
The nervous system is wired for survival. When someone experiences overwhelm, distress, or disconnection, the system looks for relief — something to bring the intensity down.
And when something works, even temporarily, the brain learns it.
Because this is how the brain works. When something helps, even temporarily, the brain learns it… and it keeps going back to it.
That’s not weakness. That’s adaptation.
This is why “just stop” doesn’t work.
The behavior is doing something real
It’s helping the system cope in the only way it currently knows how.
If we don’t understand the function of the behavior, we can’t support meaningful change.
This is part of the shift toward a more trauma-informed understanding of addiction.
This is also explored in the Trauma & Addiction: Understanding & Supporting Recovery program through Insight Learning Institute.

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
It’s easy to look at our patterns and think… “Why do I keep doing this to myself?”
Starting something… then pulling back. Getting close to something good… then shutting down. Wanting change… but feeling stuck
We call it self-sabotage but what if that’s not what’s actually happening?
What if…
👉 your system is trying to protect you
Because your body doesn’t operate on logic. It operates on experience.
If something once felt unsafe even if it’s not unsafe anymore
your nervous system can still respond like it is.
So pulling back
shutting down
avoiding
numbing
👉 that’s not failure
👉 that’s protection
Protection that learned its job really well.
The problem isn’t that your system is working against you. It’s that it hasn’t learned yet that it’s safe to do something different.
And that kind of change doesn’t happen through force. It happens through creating small moments of safety
over and over again.
That’s how the system updates. That’s how patterns shift. That’s how healing actually works.
You’re not broken
Your system adapted
And it can learn something new...
🔔 Follow along and I’ll show you how to support your nervous system in learning something different.

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
Addiction is often seen as the problem. Something to fix. Something to stop. Something that shouldn’t be happening.
But from a trauma-informed perspective… that’s not the full picture.
Addiction is not about willpower. It’s adaptation.
Your nervous system is wired for survival. When something feels overwhelming, distressing, or unsafe, your system looks for relief.
And when something works — even temporarily — your brain learns...
👉 This helps me get through
👉 This brings the intensity down
Over time, that response becomes automatic.
Not because someone is choosing it… but because their system has learned it.
This is why “just stop” doesn’t work because the behavior is doing something real.
So the question shifts from:
“What’s wrong with you?”
to:
“What is this behavior doing for you?”
That shift changes everything.
Because when we understand the function of the behavior… we can begin to support real, sustainable change.
When we understand WHY the behavior is happening and what it’s doing FOR the person…
we can start to replace it with healthier ways to create safety and regulation.

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
You’re not overreacting... What you’re feeling makes sense when you understand what your body has been through.
Your reactions aren’t random, they’re patterned. They were learned in moments where your system had to adapt quickly to keep you safe
So now… Your body responds fast, before your thinking brain can catch up. And sometimes that response feels bigger than the situation in front of you.
That doesn’t mean you’re too much. It means your nervous system is doing what it was trained to do...
👉 You’re not overreacting
👉 Your nervous system is remembering

Trauma 2 Triumph: Trauma Education & Healing
There’s a moment when you get triggered
where you know you’re safe… but your body doesn’t believe it
That’s the moment most people try to think their way out of it. And it doesn’t work because this isn’t a thinking problem... it’s a nervous system response.
So instead of trying to figure it out... try this:
👉 Look around
Name 3 things you can see
👉 Slow your breath
Let your exhale be a little longer
👉 Press your feet into the floor
Feel the support underneath you
These are small things but they give your body something it actually understands
👉 safety through experience
You don’t need to force yourself out of a trigger
You need to support your body through it
✨ Save this for when you need it and follow for more tools like this.
