Founded in 2007, The Black Doll Affair (TBDA) is a recipient of Obama's Presidential Service Award and the largest consumer group of Mattel's Black Barbie. Inspired by Doll Tests, where children ID'd the Black doll as "bad" & "ugly," Mama Doll founded the social club to remind us of our worth & beauty. Black women, the "Black Doll," share empowering stories. Women of other races, "White Dolls," affirm the beauty of Black children. Brothas remind every girl she's a Doll, not a dog. Collectively, they are "The Black Dolls" who "Be a Doll, give a doll" by wearing the Black Doll T-shirt and donating Black dolls. TBDA's doll is the Mitochondrial Eve (ME) Doll. Inspired by the African mother of all humans living today, it is a human family heirloom & educational artifact created to end racism. Rewind to the years 1977–1989… “You look like Cicely Tyson,” they teased me in school. At the time, I only knew this Hollywood superstar and iconic black actress as the slave on the TV series “Roots.” I was ashamed and embarrassed that she and I had aligning features of out-of-Africa dark skin, wide mouth, and equally wide nose that spread with a smile. So, I didn't smile much in childhood. I didn't want classmates to recognize Cicely in me.

Fast-forward to the 55-year-old I've become… I can't stop smiling, AND my smile renders the kindest compliments. In fact, it's one of my best assets! What a difference self-esteem makes! #theblackdollaffair

Today, when people say, “Mama Doll, you look like Cicely Tyson,” I smile with my big Cicely lips and say with pride, “Yes, I do! Thank you!”

Rest in peace, Cicely.
