Navigating the Labyrinth of Rumination: A Gentle Journey Inwards- Managing overthinking
(If you would like to see more photos, read this letter here on my Substack home.)

Hey there, lovely you!
There's something truly magical about witnessing the first light of the day....
This morning at 5 AM, the sunrise painted the sky with extraordinary colours—oranges, pinks, yellows....aaaah beautiful ....a canvas too fast to capture, in a second it was gone before i grabbed my phone....though I've included an image taken a little later that hints at its beauty, but without some of the beautiful colours. I also love the way we are perched high on top of a hill, looking out at rolling hills. There is something so healing about the view. Aaaah
I just love the early morning!
My cute but oh-so-naughty cats were quite spirited today, racing through the house with wild abandon... zoomies galore. Yes, I know I have "too many" cats, but each one has a story, and I simply cannot bear to part with any of them. Their playful chaos (I can hear them literally smashing things as I write this) brings a different kind of joy to my mornings. I really must move the vases...they have already broken one of my mother's.
Between preparing Adrian's lunch and enjoying a conversation with my daughter, I completed this Quiet Talk on rumination—a topic that emerged from many of your letters about adversity, suffering, and the circular thoughts that often accompany difficult times. As I read your letters I think about what i can create to help comfort and inform, so i really hope this piece helps you in some small way(Please let me know)
I believe rumination deserves a more nuanced understanding than what social media (omg Instagram and its incorrigible simple solutions! Aaaagh)typically portrays. It's not simply dwelling on trivial matters or unnecessary overthinking. Often, rumination involves processing the complex, challenging aspects of our lives—the hard-core experiences we need to sort through to find meaning and move forward.
Life's complexity resists simple solutions. And frankly, i just love the colour of life with all its grief joy, peace, frustrations, losses and learnings.
When we attempt to oversimplify our experiences, we often lose the richness and depth that give life its color, even when that colour includes shades of pain. The labyrinth of our thoughts, particularly during difficult times, isn't something to escape hastily but rather to navigate mindfully.
In this piece, The Story of the Master Weaver, a story which has profoundly affected me. As i re-read it i felt i grew to know the master and the apprentice. The master with her wisdom and the apprentice with her youthful naivety and immaturity. When the Master shows her apprentice a magnificent tapestry she created, up close, we can see and imagine irregularities woven throughout. These imperfections aren't flaws to be corrected but essential elements that give the entire canvas its unique beauty and character. Our lives follow a similar pattern—the irregularities, the difficult periods of rumination and struggle, contribute to the overall beauty of our life's work.
This perspective has been particularly meaningful as I prepare to return to natural bodybuilding competition on March 15th 2026. After completing ten competitions in the past, I've taken a four-year hiatus while navigating grief and life's other demands. Now feels like the right time to reclaim this aspect of my authentic self—to honour both the disciplined training and the periods of stepping back.
Weight training has always been my sanctuary.
I have been training and have been a personal trainer for around 20 years. I typically go to the gym once, sometimes twice a day—not just for physical transformation but for the mental clarity it provides. There's something profoundly grounding about the culture of weight training—the focus required for each rep, the discipline of progressive overload, the community of like-minded individuals all working toward their personal best.
For me, weight training is meditation in motion. When I'm under the bar, all other thoughts dissolve. There's only breath, movement, and presence. During my grief journey, the gym remained a constant—a place where I could channel emotion into controlled physical effort. Even on days when I couldn't find words for what I was feeling, my body could express itself through movement.
The structure of training programs provides an anchor when life feels chaotic. There's comfort in knowing exactly what exercises await me, what weights to lift, and how many reps to complete. This predictability creates a safe container for processing the unpredictable nature of life's challenges. Please let me know if you'd like to hear more about my weight training journey—how it's evolved over the years and the lessons it's taught me beyond physical strength.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this Quiet Talk on rumination, as I'm considering creating a second part, so I'm waiting to hear what you think.....
. This piece maintains the meditative quality with a body scan and relaxing tone that many of you have found helpful, while exploring the deeper purpose rumination might serve in our lives.
Please remember that I offer both online counselling and personal training. If you are interested, please book here. I am certified as a counsellor and personal trainer

We all search for a deeper meaning, hoping for answers that might alleviate the pain we feel....
...But what if there’s no clear answer?
(Pssst...if you want to read this pin with more photos, click here laurenostrowskifenton.substack.com/p/we-all-search…
Hey there, lovely you!
I’ve been thinking about how you’re doing and what’s been on your mind lately... It’s been four years since my mom passed, and I often reflect on those final moments with her.
Have you lost somebody you truly loved?
Just before she left us, she was so jam-packed full of life, chatting about everything from joyful memories with friends to her worries about each of my siblings. Minutes later, she was dead. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, and it inspires me to really appreciate the present. I feel that I owe it to her in a way, as it was so important to her that I ‘learn’ from life and grow in wisdom.
She was forever leaving post-its around my home, reminding me of the various wisdoms of life. Just before she died, she left two Post-its for me and the kids.
Don’t leave food in the sink; it will become blocked. ( A metaphor, perhaps?)
Respect your mother
I’ll leave those pieces of maternal wisdom for you to unpack...as I still do
Life can be chaotic, can’t it?
...There are relationships, conflicts, and financial hurdles that we all navigate daily. One thing I’ve been pondering a lot is rumination. It’s often seen as overthinking trivial things, but when those thoughts are tied to our most significant relationships or career choices, the impact can be significant.
Rumination can lead to increased anxiety and depression, elevated stress levels, and impair our ability to problem-solve. It can also disrupt sleep and lower self-esteem. In our relationships, it can cause communication issues, increased conflict, and emotional distance. If we’re not careful, we can end up neglecting the very connections that matter most to us.
Living in South Australia while my family is in Victoria makes this all the more real for me. I love my beautiful home here, yet I often miss being with them. I feel grateful to be well, but then I read your messages and feel the weight of your struggles. There’s a shared experience in all of this.
And speaking of experiences, my kittens are growing up so fast!
Watching them play together and develop their own personalities brings me immense joy. I love spending time with them, patting and holding them, and helping them socialise. It’s fascinating to see how one is more timid than the other, despite my equal love and affection for both. It’s a little reminder of how unique we all are in our responses to love and care.
Isn’t it interesting?
We all search for a deeper meaning, hoping for answers that might alleviate the pain we feel. But what if there’s no clear answer? What if the most important thing is the kindness we show each other and the joy we find in each moment?
If you find yourself caught in a cycle of rumination, here are some strategies that might help:
1. Practice Mindfulness: Focus on the present moment. This can help divert your attention from negative thoughts and reduce the tendency to overthink.
2. Recognize Your Thought Pattern*: Observe your thoughts without judgment. This can help you identify when you’re starting to ruminate, allowing you to intervene early.
3. Breathe and Relax: Engage in deep breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation. These practices can activate your body’s relaxation response and reduce stress and anxiety.
4. Cultivate Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness when you notice negative thoughts. Remember, it’s okay to feel this way, and you’re not alone.
5. Redirect Your Focus: Engage in an activity you enjoy, whether it’s spending time with loved ones, exercising, or working on a creative project. It can be a great way to shift your mindset.
6. Talk It Out: Share your feelings with someone you trust. Sometimes, just expressing what’s on your mind can lighten the load.
Recognise that some thinking or rumination time is what the subconscious needs to re-prioritise the way we look at life. Rumination may be a journey towards this resolution, so there are times when we need to devote ourselves to reasonable thought processes, realignment of values, and changing the way we see the world. This requires taking the time.
Well, if you need this time…. that's just okay, you do you.
By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can create a powerful buffer against the cycle of overthinking.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this little reflection. It took me quite a while to put it together, and it’s a bit raw and real, just like life.
Remember, I’m here as an online counsellor and personal trainer if you ever want to work together! laurenostrowskifenton.simplybook.me/v2/
Sending you all my love, and I look forward to connecting with you soon!

Finding Calm in the Storm: A Meditation for Rumination
G'day from sunny, beautiful Barossa region in South Australia!
I found myself up with the birds this morning(yep, 4 am), my mind wandering to that familiar spiral we all know too well – aaah. The washing machine cycle of rumination.
You know what I mean, right? (We look into each other's eyes knowingly)
Those thoughts that circle back, again and again...always finding their way back, no matter how far you try to manage them into oblivion.
As I sipped my morning black coffee, Adrian and Riley, my adorably chaotic kittens (and yes, I named one after my husband, but that is another story), provided their usual entertainment. There they were, tumbling across the living room floor, paws tangled together, utterly oblivious to anything but their playful wrestling match.
I couldn't help but stop and laugh at their antics – they just looked so full of joy.....so happy...
And then it hit me.
Our thoughts can get just as tangled up, can't they?
What Kittens Teach Us About Living in the Moment
Have you ever truly watched kittens at play?
There's something magical about their complete immersion in whatever they're doing. This morning, Riley pounced on a dust particle floating in a sunbeam stretched across the room( reminding me to do a better job with the dusting) – not worrying about yesterday's failed jump or tomorrow's feeding time.
Just fully engaged with that single, floating speck.
Adrian, meanwhile, was fascinated by his own tail – chasing it with the intensity of a hunter, then completely forgetting about it when a rustling paper caught his attention.
No rumination there, just pure presence.
These furry little teachers demonstrate what mindfulness experts have been telling us for years: true joy exists in the present moment.
Kittens don't replay past mistakes, endlessly attempt to resolve issues or anxiously anticipate future challenges.
They simply experience what is happening right now with their whole being.
When they play, they commit entirely.
When they rest, they surrender completely.
When they're startled, they react or respond – then let it go almost immediately.
No hard feelings...No grudges, no rehearsing better responses for next time, just moving on to the next experience.
What if we could approach life with even a fraction of that presence? What if, like kittens, we could fully engage with what's right in front of us instead of getting tangled in the web of our thoughts?
A Little Something I've Created for You
I've been working on a course to help with overthinking (more on that soon!), but in the meantime, I wanted to share something special with you. I've recorded a guided meditation that starts as a gentle conversation with instructions on how to manage rumination and flows into a soothing body scan.
It's designed to help untangle those knotted thoughts – much like I have to untangle Adrian from the curtains at least twice a day! This meditation will guide you through visualizations that create space between you and those persistent thoughts.
What to Expect in the Meditation
We'll explore safe spaces in your mind, release thoughts like balloons drifting into the sky, and connect with nature's calming presence. There's something powerful about imagining a candle flame transforming your worries into light.
The body scan at the end helps bring you back to the present moment – something my kittens excel at teaching! They're constantly reminding me that while my mind might be in yesterday or tomorrow, my body is always right here, right now.
Why We Ruminate
Our brains are just doing what they evolved to do – keep us safe by spotting problems. But for those of us who've weathered some storms, this instinct can shift into hypervigilance. One small worry becomes a snowball rolling downhill, gathering size and speed.
I have seen this pattern with many clients.
The good news? With practice and the right techniques, we can redirect this mental energy toward a kitten-like presence.
Come Join Me
Whether you're looking for one-on-one support through online counselling, wanting to boost your physical wellbeing with personal training, or simply enjoying these little glimpses into life with two crazy kittens in South Australia – I'd love to connect with you.
I am still working on the course ( out probably two weeks...i will let you know), but the meditation is available now, link attached, and I can't wait to share this journey with you. Sometimes the most powerful changes come from the simplest practices – like observing the natural mindfulness of kittens at play.
Until then, I'll be here – probably fishing Riley out from under the couch or watching Adrian attempt to climb the bookshelf for the hundredth time. These little moments of joy, these lessons in presence, are what life's all about, aren't they?
Sending oodles of sunshine and so many calm thoughts from South Australia,

Hi, my friend,
It’s Sunday, a beautiful day in South Australia!...and Adrian and I are tackling the garden—a task I've put off for far too long. Our lawn is now overrun with large thistles, and it’s in desperate need of watering and a little TLC. We initially left it unattended when the drought hit, and buying water became too much of a burden.
‘Knowing it's not enough, we must apply, Willing is not enough, we must do’, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Now, we’re facing the consequences of our choices. Ugggghhh
My day has turned into a routine of editing content and pulling weeds, a back-and-forth that feels oddly symbolic.
Meanwhile, our two little furballs, Adrian and Riley, are doing great! If you're new to the picture, they're our new kittens. We’re really enjoying their company, but the ongoing issue of people dumping cats in our area is disheartening. It seems like no matter how many we take in, there are always more appearing.
Reflecting on my garden neglect has led me to think about life itself. The sudden passing of Diane Keaton has brought some pause for reflection. She was a true pioneer, and I admired her work, especially that unforgettable film with Jack Nicholson—though the title escapes me right now.
Do you remember that one??? Do please remind me.
I felt a deep connection to her, and I hope that when people remember her, they focus on her impact on society and her empowerment of women, rather than just the media circus surrounding her personal relationships with men. She was such an inspiration.
Her passing is a reminder that we must accept death and cherish life, finding gratitude in every moment.
As I head off to record another meditation and simultaneously tackle the chaos in my garden, I want to remind you all to tend to your own gardens—both literally and metaphorically.
Don’t let things go unattended. Life moves fast, and it’s crucial to prioritise yourself and embrace every moment.
Much love to all of you, and thank you for being a part of my journey. Remember, life is fleeting—grab those moments and nurture your own garden!
Take care,
Lauren

It is what it is
What if we allowed ourselves to fully experience reality in all its rawness—the beauty, the pain, and the everyday moments?
Lauren Ostrowski Fenton
Aug 31, 2025
The picture below is yet another one of my thinking chairs…
Good morning, my friend
I am freezing! And sitting in my late mum's chair, and you know what happens when I sit in this chair? Yep,
I think... and I think some more...Today I felt a little bit about the unfairness of life and how life ‘should’ be,
and then I brought myself back into the present moment and reminded myself
It is what it is
‘It is what it is”
What if ...what if we tried to ease our grip on the idea of
“How things should be”?
What if we allowed ourselves to fully experience reality in all its rawness—the beauty, the pain, and the everyday moments?
When we can pause, breathe, and engage with life without any defences, we discover a freedom we never realised existed. This isn’t the freedom of escaping our circumstances, but rather the freedom found in being present. Being in this blessed moment! It’s the freedom of no longer battling against reality.
Confronting what ‘is’ can lead us to a profound sense of peace.
Don't you think? How is it for you? How do you cope with the raw reality of life?
I would love to hear from you....
Tornados
It’s a freezing morning here in South Australia, and yesterday we experienced some tornado winds, which was quite an interesting experience for me...
I was editing in my little Zen room (I'll just have to show this to you! It is so tiny and so so cute like a teeny weeny shoe cupboard- let me know if you would like a peek) when I stepped out to make a quick coffee and noticed that the outside chairs had vanished!
Gone~
I couldn’t help but wonder where they had gone. After chatting with Adrian on the phone, who had braved the storm on the way to work, I learned about the mini tornado that had occurred while I was being all Zen.
Later in the day, on the way to the gym, I saw many trees down across the road. The dark skys were just beautiful...
Even though it’s bone-deep cold, I do find the rains and winds so beautiful from my vantage point atop this hill.
Something personal...
Listen, friends, I'd like to share something a little personal with you... I'm sorry for not reaching out more regularly. I want to be honest with you: I have been facing a few challenges over the last two years... you know, those roadblocks life throws at you just when you think everything is going to be okay? You've got a finishing line in sight, and just as you're nearing the end, something in life goes hideously wrong. Well, that happened recently.
Do you relate?
And once more, I'm in the 'get back up' stage... oh, how I know that stage so well!
Have you recently experienced the ‘get back up stage’? And how did you go? How did you cope? Any gems of wisdom to share?
Anyway, I've been focused on my work lately, and I’m now employed as a crisis counsellor. I genuinely enjoy the work. However, it is never pleasant to hear people's sad stories. It’s nice to be part of a team and involved in helping another person. I need to do that; I need to help. I have also planned to return to university to pursue my master’s degree in social work. I hold a master’s in counselling, but I want to pursue an additional master’s to acquire more skills in social justice. I would like to learn more about how I can make a positive impact.
How are our cats?
Thanks for asking! The cats are doing well, Ruth is thriving, and the horses are happy, too. I'll add some cute pics...
How are my children? I have been experiencing an empty nest for the last couple of years, and no, I don't like it... But life does that to you sometimes. Doesn't it? After all, we ultimately parent to release our children into life rather than own them and anchor them to our apron strings. I feel so privileged to be involved in my children's lives. And yes, I would have loved for them to live with me forever, but I also understand that their time has come to explore the world and find out more about themselves. I’ve been speaking regularly with my girls, which is such a joy. But I do miss them. Honestly, if I had my choice, I would live next door to all of them, but I understand that part of life is making our own journey and figuring out how we can uniquely help others in our own right, apart from our role as parents.
And just as my children are growing, so i am ageing....61 years just around the corner...Gee, that snuck up on me!
How do you feel about ageing? Do you embrace ageing or do you find it challenging, and why?
To me, my age is not merely a measure of the years I've lived, but a testament to the resilience I've built through each challenge I've faced. Like the trees that bend in the wind, I, too, grow stronger in the storms of life.
Ok, ok, where have Laurens ‘live streams’ gone?
Yes, I know I have stopped my ‘lives’, and this is the reason why...
YouTube is my primary source of income. And yes, of course, I love creating content, but I also do it to make a living now.
And here is the crunch...’Ba Bow’
Some viewers REALLY(understatement) didn't like the mix of meditation and live sessions in their YouTube feed, so they have been unsubscribing...,
So I am going to move my live streams to Substack(Yes, it's free, but saying that, I may at a later stage ass paid courses) and keep my YouTube purely and simply for meditation. Substack is a friendly community for sharing stories, audio, and live streaming that fosters a personal and intimate experience.
I would love you to join. Here is the link:

Hi dear friends! I woke up this morning feeling under the weather with a cold and blocked ears. I am sitting here in my mother's chair, attempting to edit content.
It’s freezing outside, and I was worried because one of the cats didn’t come in overnight. Thankfully, we found her earlier this morning! I couldn’t help but feel incredibly grateful when Bethany strolled through the door at 1:30 AM, utterly unfazed by the whole night.
So, it got me thinking: I felt victorious once she nonchalantly walked in....what a blessed relief
What small victory have you celebrated recently that brought you joy? I’d love to hear your stories!
Comment below and let's focus on the little wins and gifts in life...and it's a blessing to be able to share here!

Hi dear friends,
I had a lovely counselling session yesterday morning with a beautiful soul, and it really effected me....it got me thinking about my content.
While I generally incorporate elements of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), which focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviours, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which emphasises accepting thoughts and feelings while committing to personal values, ...
A less stimulating approach ...a systematically longer....could be beneficial, especially before bed.
The chapter headings aare really useful too in case you likle a partciuar part....
Playlist: I am going to make these into a playlist
So we will have the CBT genre and these longer, simpler ones....
So, for those of you who have experienced trauma or just want something simpler, I’ve created a new video and a new genre of video content.
I’ve included chapter headings to make it easier for you to navigate; there are three chapters in total. This content is low stimulus, more comforting with larger gaps between the words.
I would greatly appreciate ...love your feedback, as I plan to create more of these and compile them into a playlist for you.
The importance of focusing on a body scan without any other mindful distractions, aside from physically releasing and relaxing, is that it allows us to switch off.
I genuinely want to hear your thoughts on this approach.
I think both styles serve important purposes in mindful health and mental well-being.
On a lighter note, Adrian has been out looking for rocks, and the cats are lounging around.
Yes, it’s still cold, but I’m cosy in my little recording room with the heater at my feet. I do love my little weeny studio!
Seriously, i need your feedback here...I love Bessel van der Kolk's work and I think it can give us the space to resolve and clarify when the meditation is simple.
I hope you’re all doing well, and I would love to get your feedback!
Waiting......still waiting.....standing on one foot.....hopping.... xxxx
Love always,
Lauren
PS
