Just finished Tokyo Ghoul ✅(Non-spoiler + spoiler sections)
Man, what a freaking ride this was. I had high hopes going into this, and it did NOT disappoint in the slightest. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, basically it takes place is modern-ish day Tokyo, and pretty much there are these things called ghouls that look and act like humans, and the only difference is that must eat human flesh to survive🫠 In response, there’s this group called the CCG that specializes in hunting the ghouls.
But before I glaze it to oblivion, I had 3 main gripes with this manga:
1. There are SOOOOOOO many characters. And a lot of them have multiple names/nicknames. And also a lot of them look similar. And some of them wear masks sometimes. And also, there are many time skips in this, so they change their appearance ALL THE TIME. Just to name one example, I lowkey thought Hori Chie was Hinami for like half of her screentime 😭Not to say that the cast isn’t memorable, because they definitely are, but it is really difficult sometimes to tell who is who😭😭😭
2. The story’s premise is honestly great in my opinion, and they execute it really well. It’s honestly an amazing moral dilemma, and with such a diverse cast of characters, there is plenty of room for content in this story. That said, I often got the feeling (mostly during the beginning-middle chps of Tokyo Ghoul Re:) that they were trying a bit too hard to make incredibly complicated lore. When this story stays simple, it is fantastic, 10/10. But when it tries to go over the top with 18 different perspectives in 1 chapter and like a bunch of technical stuff, I found myself losing interest 😵💫That said, it wasn’t very often that I felt like this.
(Spoilers)
3. This story has a bit of a problem with characters conclusions 🫤The story’s tone is kinda depressing and very violent, so as expected, they killed off a ton of characters…not? Yes, there is a lot of death in this story, but when it comes to killing off the main cast, the story falls victim to what I dub “the randomly reviving characters that really should have died there because they don’t really contribute anything after they are revived”. While I think they executed Kaneki’s version of this brilliantly, I can’t really say the same for characters like Eto, Naki, Demon Ape guy, AMON, Shinohara, Shiro (sort of), and I’ll give Nagachika a pass but he’s pushing it. And also I can’t remember but I believe the same thing happens with Tsukiyama and Uta as well? Anyway, I’m fine with a revival plot point or two, but TG feels like it does this all the time with characters that aren’t even good tbh 😭
Now that’s about enough complaining because besides those pretty minor things, this story is damn near perfect 🤩The whole thing going from “Ghouls are wrong” -> “This world is wrong” -> “This world just is” ✋ 😌 ✋ absolute cinema. As a work itself, probably my top 1 in both Complexity and Development. The world building is just so amazing and fun, and its very consistent and enjoyable, and some of the plot twists are just so good.
Imma dive into the characters now bcuz yes
Ken Kaneki is an amazing protag, probably my top 1 character in complexity, development, journey, and prob some others categories. His dynamic with Rize, especially during the um…infamous torture scene, while disgusting, is just SOOOOOOOO fking good ghfjbvsdijshbh 🤩🔥Every time his design changes is just so peak asw, his dynamics are great, overall such a good character and mandatory Lelouch victimizer mention 🤭 I could say so much more abt him but I won’t cuz holy yap already
Suzuya, don’t even get me started🔥🔥🔥🔥 Why are there no edits of this peak asf character??? Potentially the most consistent character, Suzuya is literally enjoyable in every scene he is in, absolute cinema, and that one panel of him at the end of Tokyo Ghoul fadhsugkbmsmndjljb SO FKING PEAK. Also he reminds me a lot of Kokichi, maybe that’s why he’s the🐐🐐🐐
I liked Touka a lot during Tokyo Ghoul, I think she kinda fell off during re:, but she sort of picked up during the end of it. Anyway, she’s a W waifu, liked her a lot
Tsukiyama was also a great character, liked him very much. Consistently good presence, always fun, and has solid writing.
Yomo, Yoshimura, Ayato were all pretty good and had their moments.
Akira was also pretty solid, the one scene of her at the end of Tokyo Ghoul where she says “give me a break, will ya?” 🔥🔥
Amon was lowkey kinda annoying, and the part at the end where he said he loved the weird ahh priest ghoul was just kinda gross, maybe I was supposed to feel emotional but I was just waiting for him to die
Takizawa was something I guess
Urie, Yonebayashi, and Shirazu were all realy good, I very much enjoyed each of them.
Mutsuki can go rot in a gutter bcuz this yandere is annoying
Dr. Kanou felt more like a plot device than a character, but I didn’t hate him, and the one part where Shiro was like “Kuro is breathing!” and then he said “That’s a fart” was so cold and hilarious😂
Rize was actually really solid, and for being in so little scenes she’s actually very fleshed out and honestly kinda peak.
Furuta was a fun antagonist, but I didn’t think he was great or terrible. Better antag than the likes of Code Geass or Love is War, but far worse than Monster or Danganronpa. I heard that his conclusion was peak fiction before I read this, and after finishing it, it was good but not allat. I feel like it needed to be built up to more.
Anyway, HOLY YAP, here’s my rating:
Ken > Suzuya > Tsukiyama > Urie >=< Touka > Yonebayashi > Furuta >= Shirazu > Rize > Others
Writing: 9.5/10
Enjoyability: 9.3/10
Personal Impact: 9/10
Would I recommend: Definitely not for the faint of heart, but easily one of the best written stories I’ve come across, so yes
Gonna make a community post tomorrow about what I should start next
A certain editor made a certain community post about a certain game, involving some certain characters. One of those certain characters happens to have a birthday tomorrow, so there may be an edit coming out tomorrow correcting a certain take from that certain editor while also celebrating a certain birthday 🤭🤭
Schedule for this week, mainly so I don't forget 😭😭
Today: ////////// Monday: Code Geass vs. Danganronpa Pt. 3 Tuesday: ////////// Wednesday: THH character ranking (if I'm not lazy) OR Penelope Eckhart vs. Medea Solon (if I am lazy) Thursday: ////////// Friday: The other one Saturday: ////////// Sunday: Suzaku Kururugi vs. Yu Ishigami OR Character Grading Pt. 1
