Hi! I'm Deboki, and I love talking about books and science. I did my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, and now I'm a science writer/communicator. You can find me hosting Crash Course: Organic Chemistry, and you can find my writing about microbes on the youtube channel Journey to the Microcosmos.

Here I mostly talk about whatever books and pop culture things I find interesting, and I also talk about my freelance science writing life. I also have a series called Not My Thesis from my grad school days talking about academia and grad school life.

I'm working on some new videos (including another library check-in), but in the meantime, I'm having fun keeping track of my books and other updates on substack. So if you'd like to keep up, just subscribe at okidokiboki.substack.com/

I’m still in moving limbo and have a video in the queue to edit, but in the meantime I wanted to post a link to the latest episode of Tiny Matters, the science podcast I co-host with Sam Jones. Sam and I interviewed Dr. Moira McTier about her book The Milky Way: An Autobiography of Our Galaxy, which takes a first person perspective of the Milky Way that I found super fascinating and unusual in the context of science non-fiction. It was super cool to get to ask her more about her process, and if you like nonfiction book club, I think you’ll also enjoy this discussion.

I haven't gotten a chance to work on as many videos the past few weeks...but it was for a very fun reason. This month, I'm hosting a little podcast miniseries on Scientific American's Science Talk where I take on two science/nature books each episode and just...chat about them. If you like the double book reviews I do here, then I think you'll enjoy this too.

The first episode is up today, and I'm talking about fish thanks to two books: Why Fish Don't Exist, and The Book of Eels. Let me what you think!

I made my hosting debut on Journey to the Microcosmos this week! If you don't know Journey to the Microcosmos, it's a show about microbes and microscopy, featuring the stunning footage captured by our master of microscopes James.

I've been writing for the show for a while now, and it's been my sort of "I can't believe I get to do this for a living" thing. Getting to learn about microbes in a whole new way for me, and getting to connect it to so many other parts of our world--whether that's through ecology or history or the sheer absurdity of being human--is all just so much exactly the kind of science writing I wanted to do when I decided to go down this path. And it was very fun (and also a little anxiety-inducing) to get to step out from just writing the scripts to getting to narrate one!
