This totally tubular robot doesn’t need a brain or a centralized processing system to hop around on land or swim in the water. It relies instead on air and simple physics. COMORETTO ET AL./SCIENCE (2025)
Studying the shape and arrangement of eyelashes helps scientists understand how they are so good at repelling water. Researchers are also developing eyelash-inspired designs for new products.
Our news team explains how the scientific workforce, biomedical research, and global health initiatives have been affected in the first 100 days of the Trump administration, as well as what they are keeping an eye on moving forward. By modeling the visual system of the crabs that this cuttlefish hunts, researchers found that the flashing stripes act as a form of motion camouflage, making it virtually invisible to unsuspecting crustaceans. Read the story here: www.science.org/content/article/isn-t-spaceship-it…
This tracking system can capture detailed movements of insects in flight. Learning about the nuances of flight could help researchers better understand pollination behavior or design insect-inspired robots.
A new way of tracking insect in flight can help researchers better understand their movement behaviors, or even design insect-inspired robots. Learn more in our next video publishing April 4, 2025.

This fish hides in the shadows of a shark in order to ambush its prey. Researchers documented this behavior near Italy's Lampione Island. They found that prey species have a harder time detecting the predatory fish, called a blue runner (Caranx crysos), when it is shielded by the shark. It's unclear whether the behavior increases predation success or if the fish puts itself at risk by associating with the shark. RNA-based pesticides could offer a safer, more targeted alternative to chemical pesticides. Using a mechanism called RNA interference, the first of this new type of pesticide targets the Colorado potato beetle, which has evolved resistance to existing chemicals and causes half a billion dollars in crop damage worldwide.
