Looks like Mr. @AdamLZ is in Miami this weekend AND he’s hosting a #LZMFG pop-up at the old Zumiez store in Coral Gable! I’ll be there tomorrow and maybe I’ll get him to take a bike and or a car or his out 🙌🏻
My bike giveaway is live! Hit my Instagram @alfredomancuso and just tell me why you or your friend deserves this bike! I’ll announce the winner first thing tomorrow!
I just heard about the untimely passing of one of the most inspirational people of our times, and I am gutted 💔 Ken Block will go down beyond legend status, his impact changed action sports, fashion, and the car community. I was super blessed to be able to become pro as a BMX athlete for DC Shoes in 2011 and I can say that Ken, his brand, and the people he chose to execute his vision changed my life and that of countless people. Through the success of the brands he started, athletes like myself were given opportunities to travel the world, appear on television, magazines, and have world class treatment that we were never accustomed to before. Every time I was fortunate enough to attend a shoot, a contest, or a simple dinner with Ken, he was always super down to earth, and a genuinely fun person to be around. My condolences go out to his family, his daughters, and all of the people that worked for him and with him. Truly a terrible way to start off 2023, but, there is no question that Ken lived life to the fullest, and he would want all of us to continue to do so.
If anyone ever puts you down for your dreams, all it means is that they’ve never dreamt as big as YOU! Always remembers, where there’s a will, there’s a way:
When I was 13 years old, my father passed away unexpectedly, but that impact shaped the rest of my life. The last activity, that he, my brother, Johnny @mancobra, and I would do every weekend together was go for bike rides. Feeling such a void, I put all my time and energy into riding my little swap-meat hooptie bike. I then got my first job helping day-laborers on construction sites for $15 a day. I scrounged up every penny, and my brother and I, used my moms checking account to open an eBay store and we would buy and sell parts for small profits to then buy our first used Haro Bikes. I got myself a Nyquist X2 and he got a Mirra Pro.
In order to pay the bills, my mom would work up to 3 jobs a week, take 2 trains, and 3 busses from Watts, CA to Lakewood California which would take her about 4 hours roundtrip every day. On the weekends while she slept, he and I would sneak out at 5am, with our neighbors, and ride 6 miles from South Central LA, to Lynwood, CA to ride a skatepark, before the park staff, police, and even the mayor, once, would kick us out.
I rode my ass, 7 days a week, up to 12 hours a day, made my way through high school, graduated with honors, and even played varsity soccer, all while becoming a sponsored rider by the time I was a sophomore. Then right before my 18th birthday, and prom, I blew out my ACL ligaments which ended my soccer dreams (damn you Leo Messi) and according to my Dr at the time, I would never ride BMX again. So, I got myself a job at LA fitness, and started helping my friend Phu over at EPIC BMX, so that I could save up to afford traveling for BMX and paying for my own college tuition. Then KHE Bikes turned me pro, when I turned 19, and while Phu and I ran a hugely successful eBay account, I then went on to quit my jobs, got the opportunity to travel the world, build my own brands, and never have a traditional job again.
I’ve never asked for sympathy, a handout, or even a hand (to my own fault) but if this lowly, latino kid from Watts, can beat the statistics, even after having 3 more knee surgeries throughout my BMX career, then I have no doubt, with the right focus, YOU can also do whatever you put your mind to. And if you ever wondered why I work so hard, 7 days a week, then maybe some of this will explain why.
