The Humble Homestead
We had extra free time this week, and we had the grandson during the day. So I I took advantage of that, along with the beautiful weather and forced my introverted self to go to the park TWO days in a row. It’s been beautiful actually…every mom talks to every mom and I truly don’t think anyone leaves feeling isolated!!!!
I made a new friend this week, a wonderful fellow homeschooling mama. She gave me a very active sourdough starter yesterday at the park (I killed mine in the spring when I got sick and have had a hard time getting a strong one established)
Anyway…I left it on the counter overnight and didn’t even feed it until about 10 this am.
I wrapped it in a cloth and placed it in the microwave (our house tends to run cool)
But the microwave also sits above the stove and my son used the oven today.
At 4 o’clock…it’s about to burst!!! 🙌🏼
How exciting!!!!
She also gave me some plant clippings today…she’s quickly becoming my bff and she doesn’t even know it 😂😍
I’m so excited to finally get back into the sourdough game…hopefully I didn’t forget everything!! Get out and do a brave thing this week!!
Happy Wednesday friends!!!
Now it’s gonna need a name…drop me some ideas in the comments.

Matthias made dinner tonight.
We hopped on Pinterest and searched ground beef, because it was already thawed in the fridge. He chose beefaroni, he learned that you can substitute things you want (like the noodle shape: he wanted shells, the recipe called for elbows)
He really did just about everything all on his own, with the supervision of me for the hot/heavy parts. Incorporating some math for measurements, he did SO well staying on task and safely following instructions (this is huge for most energy bound 7 yr old boys)
He even helped poke holes and sauce the shishito peppers (knowing full well he wasn’t going to attempt to eat them 😂)
He’s so proud of himself and he loved his meal.

Yesterday I threw a whole chicken into the pressure cooker. When I pulled the chicken out, I deboned and placed all the bones back into the pot, prepping some veggies, I added some onion peels/ends, celery, carrot tops and garlic…filled with water and slow cooked for 24 hours. I now have TWELVE cups of homemade bone broth, that I made for FREE from scraps!!!
sometimes I make large batches in the big roaster and pressure can those for the shelf, but this is the perfect way to prep a few jars for the fridge to be used over the next week or so.
Also, I’ll get 2-3 full meals out of that chicken.
Don’t let the grocery store prices scare you. You CAN make simple staples easily at home for little cost 💛

My step mother gifted me this cookbook for Christmas. It was handed down to her from her mother. She may never know what treasure this kind of thoughtful gift is to me. Generational gifts are Better than anything bought in a store.

Matthias and I had the privilege to go hang out with some friends to learn and help with the meat chicken process.
Actually this 15 seconds was all he could do, and that’s ok.
He got to make new friends (they also have 4 boys) and had a blast playing in the mud puddles and rain!!!
I wish I would’ve gotten more pics, but it’s kind of a thing with your hands 😜
Matthias said he was sad for the chickens, but it was so nice to use this opportunity to educate him on the commercial meat industry and why it’s important to raise our own food. How these chickens had an amazing life; they were held, loved, got sunshine and grass and bugs, they were then thanked for providing food, and finished with one bad day!
It’s so important that we stop being so disconnected from our food source. That we learn to be self sufficient and independent!
I’m so incredibly thankful for my growing homestead community 💛
