From time to time, someone comments on one of my videos saying, “The sound is amazing, but it doesn’t matter because it has no soul.” That made me think.
What is “soul” in music?
Can a song that awakens emotion, nostalgia, memories, joy, chills, and connection truly be called soulless?
If a piece is created with hours of dedication, aesthetic care, artistic intention, and human vision, even with the assistance of artificial intelligence, does it lose its soul because of the tool used?
When a painter uses a new type of paint, does the art lose its soul? When a musician uses synthesizers or digital technology, does the emotion disappear? When a writer leaves the typewriter behind and starts using a computer, do the words become less true? When a director uses modern visual effects, does the film stop being moving? When an architect relies on advanced software to design, does the building lose its artistic intention? When a producer records in a home studio instead of a large analog studio, does the music become less sincere? When a composer uses an electric piano instead of a grand piano, does the sensitivity vanish? When an artist uses artificial intelligence as a creative tool, does human intention cease to exist?
So perhaps the issue is not the tool.
Perhaps the real question is whether we are willing to understand new forms of creation.
Art has always evolved. Tools have always changed. But intention, sensitivity, and vision remain human.
If something moves you, connects with you, and stays in your memory, perhaps that is exactly where the soul resides.
