Stanton Peele is a psychologist who has changed the addiction field. He has pioneered, among other things, the idea that addiction occurs with a range of experiences, and the "harm reduction" approach to addiction. He has created the Life Process Program for treating addiction at St. Gregory Retreat Centers.

His website at www.peele.net contains much of his widely published writing, as well as his opinions and communications with people with addictive problems.

In his new book "Addiction Proof Your Child", to be published in August, Stanton describes how we are going wrong educating young people about drugs and alcohol, and how to prepare them to lead addiction free lives.

We believe in certain truths that are currently unquestionable. Michael Pollan has told us we CAN question these things — if we take psychedelics. Is that our only window into truth? If it is, we’ll be stuck with all the claptrap that currently bedevils us. Fortunately there is another way — if you have the guts to pursue the truth.

Despite the supposed dominance in America of CBT—which treats depression as a learned, cognitive response—Americans top to bottom see it as a permanent disease. This has occurred alongside the medical failures to treat depression — it and suicide have risen precipitously, particularly among the young and underprivileged, even as long-term antidepressant prescriptions have tripled.

In this context, US PA Senator John Fetterman is being universally lauded for revealing his depression. This has occurred after he has made a series of self- and community-harming decisions. At age 53, he has come to within an inch of his life and, regretting his decisions, he has been indefinitely hospitalized for depression.

Indeed, he has spent the majority of time since his swearing in in various hospitals. In this way, he is a cultural template for a society that is willfully destroying its mental health and decreasing its lifespan.

In his liaisoning work outside of LPP, Stanton interacts with LPP curious potential clients. In doing so he learns how pervasive 12-step and trauma therapies are.

Three ways to think about goal setting:

1) closelined by values
2) small, gradual (practice just showing up)
3) go big and work backwards (be like someone you admire)

Happy New Year!
