Jefferson Airplane

Jefferson Airplane’s debut show was on August 13, 1965 at the Matrix nightclub in San Francisco. The first performance featured Marty Balin on vocals, Paul Kantner on vocals/rhythm guitar, and Jorma Kaukonen on lead guitar. Signe Anderson, (who sang on Jefferson Airplane’s first recording “Jefferson Airplane Takes Off”) also performed. Bass player, Jack Casady, and drummer, Skip Spence, (who was later one of the original members of Moby Grape) joined the band two months later. Spencer Dryden became the drummer in June of 1966 and Grace Slick joined as vocalist in October of 1966. They had hit singles "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," from the album “Surrealistic Pillow.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Jefferson Airplane

Did you know Jefferson Airplane was denied access to perform a free concert in San Francisco? Apparently, due to a ban on amplified instruments in Golden Gate Park. “We built this city on orchestral music,” is what the city told the Airplane.

Always fighting for a revolution ✌️

Jefferson Airplane

“For San Francisco’s Jefferson Airplane, music was the vehicle toward change. They celebrated freedom, growth, searching, risk taking, adventure, independence, open-mindedness, love and good ol’ fun. Their music promoted strength in the face of adversity and staring mortality in the eye.” -GOT A REVOLUTION

Hot Tuna launched its hard-driving “Rampage Trilogy” with AMERICA’S CHOICE, a change that pushed the group from its earlier acoustic-blues roots into full-blown power-trio rock. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, bassist Jack Casady, and drummer Bob Steeler stretch out on tracks like “Funky #7” and “Serpent Of Dreams,” while the tongue-in-cheek “Hit Single #1” became a fan favorite.

Quadraphonic sound, or 4.0 surround sound, utilizes four audio channels connected to four speakers positioned at the corners of a listening space. The multi-tracked audio is mixed dimensional, immersing the listener in an expansive soundscape.

Jefferson Airplane

“People who write books really get Janis wrong. The woman I knew would cackle, she’d laugh so hard, and was fun to be with. Very vocal, very outspoken, very funny. Texas women tend to be like that. They called us fire and ice. I was the ice and she was the fire. But I think she is more of a symbol of those times than I. She had more style. My voice is OK, but she really pushed the envelope.” -Grace Slick
