Climate leaders from governments, philanthropy and business gathered in New York this week to discuss new ways to direct vital #financing to manage the #climate #crisis.
The “loss and damage” fund – overdue by four years now, stirred contentious debate, as it usually does. It is money pledged by #wealthy nations responsible for the lion’s share of emissions to developing nations bearing the brunt of global #warming without significantly contributing to it.
In 2009 wealthy economies pledged to give developing nations $100 billion a year by 2020, their promise remains unfulfilled. Kenyan President William #Ruto called for taxing the fossil fuel trade to plug the budget deficit. Ruto added that "Neither Africa nor the developing world stands in need for charity or handout... What we need is fairness."
Barbados prime minister Mia Mottley, implored world leaders in New York to take the climate crisis and the required financing as seriously as they do the Russia-Ukraine conflict. #lossanddamagefund #climatefinancing #UNGA78 #CGTNUN

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu struck an optimistic tone in his address to the #UN General Assembly on Sep. 22. Netanyahu said his country is “at the cusp” of a breakthrough leading to a #peace deal with Saudi Arabia. The Israeli prime minister did not discuss the known obstacles facing such a deal.
Netanyahu used visual aids once again in his address, displaying a map showing the six countries that have normalized relations with Israel so far. Four of these countries did so during the Trump administration in 2020, in what is called the #Abraham Accords.
The prime minister believes that a potential peace deal between #Israel and #Saudi Arabia would usher a new Middle East. Some of the obstacles include the Saudis’ call for progress in the creation for a #Palestinian state. A difficult demand to sell to Netanyahu’s current nationalist government. Another hurdle is Saudi Arabia’s demand for a defense pact with the U.S. and help building a civilian #nuclear program. #Abrahamaccords #UNGA78 #CGTNUN

A special session on the #Ukrainian #crisis was held at the UN Security Council in New York on Sep. 20. The high-level session took place on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly. #Russia and #Ukraine traded barbs while #China and #Germany called for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelenskyy addressed the UN Security Council in person for the first time since the beginning of his country’s conflict with Russia. He accused #Moscow of illegally occupying its seat as a Security Council permanent member and demanded the General Assembly be given power to overcome Russia’s #veto power.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei #Lavrov accused the West of “selectively turning to norms and principles on a case-by-case basis exclusively based on their parochial geopolitical needs.”
Although Zelenskyy was gone from the Security Council by the time Lavrov started speaking, the incident highlighted the #UN’s role as a venue where conflicting parties can disagree through dialogue rather than weaponry. #UNGA #UNGA78 #UNSC #CGTNUN

World leaders gathered in New York on Sep. 19 for the first day of the U.N. General Assembly high-level meeting. The #Russia-#Ukraine conflict took center stage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelenskyy presented his case in front of the UN General Assembly (#UNGA). It is the first time the Ukrainian President makes an appearance at the annual meeting since the start of his country’s conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy accused #Moscow of attempting to weaponize global #food #shortage among other accusations and said #Kyiv was preparing for a global #peace summit. U.S. President Joe #Biden also focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in his speech. He called on world leaders to not let their support for Ukraine diminish and argued that Russia was counting on countries to grow tired of that conflict.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio #Lula da Silva called for dialogue between Russia and Ukraine to achieve peace. Lula is set to meet with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of UNGA on Sep. 20. It is expected that Zelenskyy will renew his efforts to convince nations in the Global South to take a firmer stance against Russia.
