Three Knocks in the Night
A true story from the life of Ida S. Scudder
In the late 19th century, in Vellore, a young American woman named Ida Scudder was visiting her missionary parents. She had no intention of becoming a missionary or a doctor. She planned to return to America and live a comfortable life.
One night changed everything.
The First Knock
A man knocked urgently at the door. His young wife was in labor and suffering terribly. Because of cultural customs, she could not be seen by a male doctor. Ida’s father, a physician, offered to help—but the husband refused. There was no woman doctor available. The man left in desperation.
The Second Knock
Soon after, another man came with the same plea. His wife was also in critical condition during childbirth. Again, Ida’s father offered medical help. Again, the family refused because he was a man.
The Third Knock
Later that night, a third man arrived with the same urgent request. And once again, there was nothing Ida could do.
By morning, Ida learned that all three young women had died.
A Night That Changed a Life
That night broke her heart. She realized that women were dying simply because there were no female doctors to treat them.
Ida knelt in prayer and surrendered her plans to God. She decided she would become a doctor and return to India to serve women in need.
She went back to America, studied medicine, and eventually returned to Vellore as a trained physician. What began as a small clinic grew into the world-renowned Christian Medical College Vellore.
Today, thousands of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers have been trained there, and millions of patients have been treated—all because one young woman responded to three knocks in the night.
The Message for Us
Sometimes God speaks through interruption.
Sometimes purpose is born through heartbreak.
Sometimes a single night can redirect an entire life.
What will we do when opportunity knocks?
The story of Ida Scudder reminds us that compassion, when surrendered to God, can change the world.

A Long Walk for God’s Word – The Story of Mary Jones
In 1800, in a small village in Wales, there lived a young girl named Mary Jones.
Mary loved God deeply. But there was one problem—she did not own a Bible.
At that time, Bibles were rare and expensive. Very few families in her village had one. Mary would walk to a nearby farm just to read a Bible whenever she had the chance. She treasured every word.
For six long years, Mary saved every penny she could. She worked hard, helped others, and patiently waited.
Finally, at the age of 15, she had enough money.
But there was another challenge—the nearest place to buy a Bible was 26 miles (about 42 km) away in Bala.
So Mary did something extraordinary.
She walked barefoot all the way to Bala.
When she arrived, she met Thomas Charles, a minister who sold Bibles. Sadly, he told her there were no Bibles left for sale.
Mary burst into tears.
Her determination and love for God’s Word touched his heart. He decided to give her one of the Bibles that had been reserved for someone else.
Mary finally held her very own Bible in her hands.
This powerful moment later inspired the formation of the British and Foreign Bible Society, an organization dedicated to making the Bible available to people everywhere.

A STORY OF LOVE AND FORGIVENESS
During World War II, Jacob DeShazer was a soldier filled with anger and a desire for revenge. He took part in the famous Doolittle air raid over Japan and was later captured, becoming a prisoner of war. In captivity, he experienced deep suffering, loneliness, and hatred toward his captors.
Everything changed when he was given a Bible.
As he began to read, the words of Jesus challenged his heart. Instead of holding onto hatred, Jacob encountered forgiveness. In that prison cell, he surrendered his life to Christ. His anger was replaced with peace. His hatred was replaced with love.
After the war, Jacob made an unexpected decision — he returned to Japan, not for revenge, but as a missionary. He shared the message of forgiveness with the very people he once hated.
One of those impacted by this message was Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese commander involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Through the testimony of Jacob’s transformed life, Mitsuo also came to faith in Christ.
Jacob’s story reminds us: no heart is too broken, no past too dark, and no person beyond the transforming power of Jesus.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
Love forgives.
Grace transforms.
Jesus makes all things new.
This story challenges us today:
Who do we need to forgive?
What anger do we need to surrender?
What could God do with a fully changed heart?

At times, our anxiety is stirred by circumstances; at other times, it rises from inner turmoil. Either way, it is no match for the peace of God, “which surpasses all understanding.”
Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
