There is a well-established thematic and mythic parallel between the biblical story of Jacob and Esau and the Norse dynamic of Loki, Thor, and Odin. In this comparison:
Jacob parallels Loki as the trickster, deceiver, and cunning manipulator, favored by his mother and using wit to outmaneuver his stronger brother.
Esau parallels Thor as the noble, physically strong, straightforward, and favored son, a "man's man" who is outwitted by his younger brother.
Odin parallels God (El) as the ultimate authority and father figure, whose blessing or favor is the object of the brothers' rivalry.

Odin/God stand as the ultimate source of blessing, inheritance, or authority, with the narrative tension revolving around which son will be chosen or favored.
