Syracuse, N.Y. - An airplane trying to leave Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Saturday got stuck while backing off a ramp.

American Airlines Flight 1235 to Charlotte, North Carolina, left the gate for its 6 a.m. departure and got stuck when it was pushed onto a grassy area off the ramp, according to an airport spokesperson who refused to identify themself.

The 158 passengers were taken off the plane and brought back to the terminal, the spokesperson said.

American Airlines is trying to rebook the passengers, the spokesperson said.

American’s ground team tried to move the airplane, a Boeing 737, but couldn’t get it out after trying for an hour. The airplane was still stuck at 10 a.m.

One passenger, Jonathan Fossel, told syracuse.com that airport crews used two different kinds of equipment to pull the plane from the mud.

“You could feel the plane going back and forth as they were pulling on it,” he said.

As passengers exited, American staff discouraged them from taking photos of the stuck airplane, Fossel said.

“But that did not stop us from taking pictures of it,” he said.

Fossel, 23, who was on his way to Charlotte to catch a connecting flight to The Bahamas with his sister, rebooked their flights with JetBlue.

A recovery team is on its way to the airport to dislodge the airplane. Other flights were not impacted, the spokesperson said.

Four Delta Air Lines flight attendants were injured on Friday after a flight bound for Australia experienced what the airline described as "brief turbulence."

The small plane was bound for Mungalalu Truscott Airport, more than 400 miles away, when it reported engine troubles and plunged into the shallow, crocodile-infested waters just three minutes after takeoff, flight data shows.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is urging anyone who filmed the crash to submit their footage.

Officials said a team of investigators is expected on site Friday to examine the aircraft and crash site.

“The investigation team will conduct a range of evidence-gathering activities, including aircraft examination and site mapping, and will recover any aircraft flight recorders or other components of interest for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra,” the agency said.

“Investigators will also interview flight crew, passengers, and any witnesses, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data and CCTV footage, as well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.”
