I saw Superman on Thursday and it took me a while to gather my feelings about it, but here is a short, spoiler-free review:
Take any individual, textual piece of Superman (2025), and you’ll likely think nothing of it. The characters are shallow, the plot is chaotic, and the cinematography is grating. But I nevertheless walked away from this movie really enjoying it. More than anything, Gunn's Superman is a statement about the character’s larger role in pop-culture. This film is just so unabashedly excited about the comic-book world of Superman. The team at the Daily Planet are so spunky and fun, Nicolas Holt’s Lex Luthor is so classically spiteful, and the general goofy sci-fi tone of Superman comics is replicated perfectly. When I went to see Justice League back in the day, I commented to my friend that they could make a horrible movie, but as a comic fan, I’m still gonna smile when I see a Parademon or a reference to Darkseid. To have an entire film that seems as passionate about DC comics as me is an absolute treat. This isn’t the greatest comic book movie of all time, and I don’t think its themes are particularly interesting, but this is just a massively fun romp from start to finish. It’s the kind of movie that I want to see an entire universe built off of. In a world of bloated, complicated extended universes, that is a spectacular compliment.
Just finished Far Sector. What a run man! I went in pretty skeptical (the last thing DC needs is yet another Earth lantern). But Jo Mullein is utterly fantastic as the star of the book. Jessica Cruz and Guy Gardner are still my favorite GLs, but Jo might be top three for me (sorry guys, Hal and John just aren't my favorites). And my goodness, Jamal Campbell's art was top of the line.
I've got a lot of Green Lantern to catch up on. Grant Morrison GL seems tailor made for me. I've heard "interesting" things about Geoffroy Thorne's Green Lantern. The preview for Absolute Green Lantern looks hype. More to report soon.
Catching up to current DC continuity after being out of game for a while. Finished Dark Crisis and Titans: Beast World. Currently reading Zdarsky's Batman. A lot to look forward to!
1. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
4. Spiderman: No Way Home
5. Thor: Love and Thunder
6. Eternals
7. Black Widow
