I wish you were here watching this New Edition biopic with me. You would’ve loved it, particularly the part where New Edition’s A&R breaks the news to them that Bobby Brown (and Al B. Sure) would be joining them on tour. That was the very first concert you and Dad ever took me to. They played all our favorite songs: Don’t Be Cruel. Roni. If It Isn’t Love. Mr. Telephone Man. You even covered my eyes when Bobby Brown started grinding on that woman on stage. That night, in my mind, remains in 4K.

Grief is an ornery shrew that’s always evolving and arriving unpredictably. There’s been scores of times over the past 3 years since you’ve passed that I’ve found myself frozen in the fetal position. But this time felt more like tears of joy. Music made you elated and your taste in music was impeccable. Waking up on Saturday mornings to the sounds of Ashford & Simpson or Ashanti bumping beneath the roar of the vacuum. Riding shotgun strapped with my gameboy as you sang Whitney Houston while driving in the slow lane. Seeing your smile radiate as you danced around the house to Janet Jackson. I find peace in memories like these, thankful for you passing your passions down to me, eternally grateful to be your son.

This is a big deal, Analysts. On Thursday, June 5, 2025, we'll be doing our first CULTURE UNITED in person at the GRAMMY Museum during The Recording Academy's GRAMMY Block Party.

The discussion will take place from 7:40PM to 8:40PM and will be focused on LA Hip Hop culture as part of the theme of the broader event.
