The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning over the global toll of #loneliness, estimating that the condition contributes to more than 800,000 deaths worldwide each year.
In a new report, the UN health agency described loneliness and social isolation as a “public health challenge of our time”, urging governments and communities to treat social connection as a priority.
According to the report, loneliness leads to over 871,000 deaths annually — averaging more than 100 fatalities every hour. The WHO defines loneliness as the distressing gap between the social relationships individuals desire and those they actually experience.
“At a time when people are more digitally connected than ever before, a growing number of individuals are feeling isolated and alone,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “This paradox must be addressed urgently.”
The report finds that one in every six people globally suffers from loneliness. Although the problem affects people of all ages, the report highlights that young individuals and those living in low- and middle-income countries are particularly at risk.
Chido Mpemba, co-chair of the WHO Commission on Social Connection, noted that even among digitally connected youth, feelings of loneliness are widespread. “As technology reshapes our societies, we must ensure it brings us closer together — not further apart,” she said.
Beyond emotional distress, loneliness is linked to a range of serious health concerns, including stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Studies cited in the report suggest that people experiencing social isolation are at significantly higher risk of premature death, while those with strong social networks enjoy better mental health and increased longevity. #Scoopwatch#who#health#issues
Energy Minister Awais Leghari has written letters to all chief ministers regarding the decision to discontinue the collection of Electricity Duty through electricity bills starting from July 1, 2025.
In his letters, the federal minister sought the support of all chief ministers in removing the complexities arising from multiple charges, taxes, and duties being collected through consumer bills.
He stated that high electricity tariffs are already a significant challenge, and the additional burden of various levies further complicates the billing structure, making it difficult for consumers to understand and manage their electricity costs.
The minister also highlighted the federal government’s efforts to reduce power tariffs, including renegotiating Independent Power Producer (IPP) contracts, lowering the Return on Equity (ROE) for government-owned power plants, and implementing other structural reforms. #Scoopwatch#pakistan#electricity
U.S. President Donald Trump suggested the government efficiency department should review the subsidies Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s companies have received in order to save money, reigniting a war of words between the world’s most powerful man and its richest. Trump’s remarks on Tuesday came after Musk renewed his criticism of the sweeping tax-cut and spending bill, vowing to unseat lawmakers who supported it after campaigning on limiting government spending.
Tesla shares fell nearly 5% in premarket trading. Feuding with Trump could create hurdles for Tesla and the rest of Musk’s business empire. The U.S. Transportation Department regulates vehicle design and would play a key role in deciding whether Tesla can mass-produce robotaxis without pedals and steering wheels, while Musk’s rocket company SpaceX has about $22 billion in federal contracts. “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, referring to the federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). #elon#elonmusk#trump#doge#Scoopwatch
On Tuesday morning, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Lahore and surrounding areas of Punjab, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported. The tremor hit at 6:39 am, with its epicenter located 25 kilometers south-southwest of Lahore at a depth of 14 kilometers. Residents in Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Mureed, and other districts felt the quake.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far. Local authorities are currently inspecting buildings throughout Punjab to check for any structural damage caused by the earthquake. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has placed emergency operation centers on alert for the next 24 hours in case of aftershocks.
PDMA also advised people to report any damage by calling their helpline at 1129. This recent quake comes after a 3.9-magnitude tremor on June 30 near Dera Ghazi Khan and a 4.8-magnitude quake recorded the same day in Balochistan near Zhob. Earlier that weekend, a stronger 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Musakhail in Balochistan, injuring five people and damaging mud houses.
Pakistan is prone to earthquakes due to its location along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country has experienced numerous low to moderate earthquakes over recent months, highlighting the ongoing risk and need for preparedness. #earthquake#lahore#punjab#Scoopwatch
WASHINGTON: As the world grapples with escalating conflicts, deepening geopolitical rifts, and growing doubts over the efficacy of multilateral institutions, Pakistan assumes the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, taking on a symbolic but strategic role at a particularly fraught moment.
This marks Pakistan’s eighth term on the 15-member body and its first presidency since 2013. Islamabad began its current two-year term as a non-permanent member in January 2025 and will serve through the end of 2026.
Talking to Dawn, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, noted the challenges that define the current international landscape.
“Pakistan is going to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council at a time of global tumult marked by growing instability, escalating conflicts, complex geopolitical and geostrategic landscape, and serious threats to international peace and security,” he said.
While the presidency rotates monthly and does not carry executive authority, it allows the presiding country to influence the Council’s agenda and tone — a platform that matters at a time when the UNSC is increasingly seen as deadlocked, especially on issues like Gaza and Ukraine. With global trust in multilateral mechanisms under strain, Pakistan’s leadership — even if brief — will be closely watched. #pakistan#india#unsc#unsecuritycouncil#Scoopwatch
More than a thousand schools were closed in France on Tuesday and the top floor of the Eiffel Tower was shut to tourists as a severe heatwave continued to grip Europe, triggering health alerts across the region.
The Mediterranean Sea was up to 6 degrees Celsius warmer than usual for the time of year, hitting a record of as much as 30°C (86°F) in Spain’s Balearic Sea as a heat dome trapped hot air above Europe, the country’s Aemet weather forecaster said.
Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, heating up at twice the global average, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, making extreme heatwaves occur earlier in the year, and persist into later months.
In France, the heat was set to peak on Tuesday, reaching 40-41°C in some areas and 36-39°C in most others, weather forecaster Meteo France said. Sixteen departments will be on the highest level of alert from noon, with 68 on the second highest.
Some 1,350 schools will be fully or partially closed due to the heat, up significantly from around 200 on Monday, the Education Ministry said. The top floor of the Eiffel Tower will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, with visitors advised to drink plenty of water. #europe#france#heatwave#eiffeltower#globalwarming#ScoopWatch
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) has offered students to resit exams in the November session free of charge if they were affected by any of the three exam papers leaked in the recent May/June session.
The CIE board, which conducts O- and A-level exams, admitted last month that parts of its question papers for examinations in June had been leaked, and that said students will be given extra marks for those questions.
Just days prior to CIE’s admission of the leaks, a parliamentary panel was assured on that findings of the inquiry report over the issue of alleged paper leaks of O/A level would be shared after June 16.
In a post on its Facebook page on Monday, CIE shared an update for students who sat one or more of the three affected papers in the June 2025 exam series: Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics Paper 12, Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics Paper 42, and Cambridge International AS and A Level Computer Science Paper 22.
“The results for these syllabuses will be released as normal,” CIE said.
“We’re offering free syllabus entry resits in the upcoming November 2025 exam series for students who sat one or more of the three affected papers in June 2025.
“We have sent a message to all candidates and their families through schools and will provide further information following the release of our June 2025 exam series results,” CIE added.
“Candidates are asked to contact their schools should they have further questions, and thank you once again to all students and families.”
While the May/June session was ongoing, students and parents had complained of several papers being scheduled on the same day and demanded a revision in the date, claiming pressure on candidates who had to sit two or even three exams in one day. #Scoopwatch#pakistan#cambridge#olevels#Alevels#cie#exams
