22 years ago today, the iconic Powerpuff Girls Christmas special ‘Twas The Fight Before Christmas’ premiered on Cartoon Network.

Let's review.

On Christmas Eve, The Powerpuff Girls warn Princess Morbucks that she will not get anything but coal in her stocking if she does not improve her attitude. Princess becomes worried about the prospect, and soon travels to the North Pole and discovers that she is the total of the "naughty list", so she decides to switch the "nice list" with the "naughty list" so she can have her wish to be a Powerpuff Girl granted. The following very early morning, Bubbles discovers that their house and other houses have nothing but coal, and thinks Santa made a mistake. The girls get ready to fly to the North Pole but are greeted by Princess Morbucks, now a Powerpuff Girl. A large chase and battle ensue as the girls rush to the North Pole to inform Santa while fighting off Princess. When they do arrive, Santa is not happy to see them, as they crash into his office after destroying his workshop, and, on top of that, he is exhausted from delivering coal all night. The Powerpuff Girls and Princess both make their case to Santa on which story to believe, but Santa soon realizes who The Powerpuff Girls are and acknowledges their heroism. An infuriated Princess then throws a tantrum, which exposes her evil nature and her list-switching scheme in front of Santa. This results in her being put on the "Permanent Naughty Plaque", and having her powers stripped by Santa. He then tries to formulate a plan to rectify his mistake and asks the girls to deliver the presents, as his sleigh is destroyed. The girls happily accept the task, and deliver the presents to children all over the world at lightning speed and deliver Princess to the police, returning home just in time for sunrise and opening up their presents with Professor Utonium.

Sedusa schemes to regain her power by seducing the Gangreen Gang into stealing Egyptian artifacts. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup uncover her plot after the Mayor mistakes a magical scepter for a candy cane. With Townsville under threat, the girls face laser blasts and snake‑like hair attacks until Blossom cleverly removes Sedusa’s tiara, stripping her of power!

📺 From The Powerpuff Girls Season 6, Episode 14: "Aspirations."

Let's review.

A number of daring robberies are occurring right under the PPGs' noses...or lack thereof. Anyway, the girls dismiss the Gangreen Gang as suspects since they believe the gang is unable to concoct anything more than a petty theft. Little do they know, the boys have been trained by a mysterious benefactor: Sedusa! At last, we get some closure to why we haven't seen her since Season 2. Her hair was the source of her power. When Ms. Bellum cut it, Sedusa's super-abilities were effectively neutered as well.

The role Sedusa plays in this episode is a little complex. She uses sex appeal as a means to get the Gangreen Gang to do her bidding. However, the stronger theme in the episode is Sedusa as a mother figure to the boys. There were some really poignant scenes, especially when Sedusa reveals her true motives. What was really refreshing was how completely different the PPGs handled the situation from "Slave the Day." Their compassion spoke volumes. I can only hope it was a conscious effort rather than a byproduct of the apparent stricter CN standards and practices in the later seasons.

BTW, I loved Blossom's, "something's amiss here, and we're gonna find out what", line. Oh, and Bubbles', "Asps. Very dangerous" line, too.

After saving the Mayor from a monster attack, the Powerpuff Girls are rewarded with candy. Soon their sweet tooth grows into obsession, and Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup strike a mischievous deal with Mojo Jojo to stage crimes so they can keep earning treats. At first the plan works, but when Mojo slyly steals the entire candy jar, Blossom’s rage erupts with “You have been a bad monkey, Mojo” before the girls unleash their fury on the evil genius!

📺 From The Powerpuff Girls Season 3, Episode 8a: "Candy is Dandy."

Let's review.

The Mayor gives the PPGs candy as a reward for saving the day. As a result, the girls become instantly hooked on the stuff! The only way they can get more is by saving Townsville. The girls make a deal with Mojo to have him attack the city each day so they can get more sweets.

This was a great episode! Mojo, the Mayor, and the girls were hilarious. So many great scenes it would be unfair to only point out a few. Here's a surprise: Most people who saw this episode thought the girls were extremely cruel to Mojo; I didn't. The girls were out of control due to their sugar addition, and besides, Mojo did ask for it by stealing the Mayor's candy!

One complaint: There seems to be a continuity error in this episode. In "Just Another Manic Mojo", Mojo gave the girls lollipops to stop them from playing hide-and-seek. I'd thought I could explain this discrepancy by assuming the Mayor's candy is somehow different than "regular" candy. However in this episode, Blossom explicitly mentions that the Professor forbid them to ever eat candy. Can't really blame the writers too much. Sometimes you wish you had a time machine to go back and erase those little things that would prevent a perfectly good episode from being written just for continuity's sake.

Saved from a subway train, Big Billy pledges loyalty to Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. His goofy attempts at heroism include broccoli battles, to even brushing Blossom’s teeth! But when his clumsy kindness eventually gets out of hand, Billy causes havoc across Townsville!

📺 From The Powerpuff Girls Season 2, Episode 11: "Slave the Day."

Let's review.

Here's another episode that's been done many times on other sitcoms. One character saves another character from certain doom. The one who was saved feels indebted to the other character and tries constantly to show his/her thanks by "helping" the one who saved him/her. Of course, all that person ends up really doing is making the other person's life miserable. I gave credit for the entertaining ways Billy "helps" the girls, but the overall formula is just too darn predictable. For a forth time this season, the Girls exhibit a shocking lack of compassion. Rather than "calling it even," the Girls pound the heck out of Billy for saving their lives.
