Catharsis, what can one say about it? Everyone has negative emotions. But society, with intentions good or ill, would have us deny ever feeling fear, or anger, or pity, or sadness. This repression of a normal part of the psyche creates stress. Through the ages, art has played a role in providing some relief by allowing people to explore and indulge their negative emotions vicariously. Once, people turned to classical music, ancient Greek tragidies, Shakespeare, or opera. Look at paintings by Schongauer, Messina, Ribera, Stubbs, and Goya, and you will see Saints being tortured, an animal being eaten alive, and a firing squad. Today, we usually turn to movies and video games. Finding the few gems worth our attention in the great heap available to us, however, is not easy.
