St. John of Damascus, On the Orthodox Faith, chapter 45, On the Divine Economy and on God’s care for us and our salvation: “Yet the compassionate giver of being and bestower of well being did not abandon him (Adam/mankind) but at first educated him in many ways and called upon him to return in groaning and trembling, by a deluge of water and near destruction of the whole race, by a confusion and division of tongues, by angelic visitation, by a wholesale burning of cities, by theophanies in symbolic form, by wars, victories, defeats, signs and wonders, and various acts of power, by the law and the prophets, *the deliberate purpose of which was the eradication of sin, which had become defused in many ways and had enslaved humanity and heaped up every kind of evil on human life, and the return of humanity to well being.* Since it was through sin that death came into the world like a ferocious wild animal to ravage human life, it was necessary that the humanity that was to be redeemed should be sinless and not subject to death through sin, and moreover that it should be strengthened and renewed in its nature and guided in deed and taught the way of virtue that leads away from corruption and towards eternal life.”
