The official YouTubeยฎ Channel for British Multimedia group THE THE

THE THE was formed in 1979 by Matt Johnson. His genre is all his own: it is music of long shadows, high hopes, channelled anger, feverish passions and sweetly disturbing poignancy. It is pop and rock, blues and folk, soul and polemic. It spans alienated electronics to twisted cinematic soundtracks, guitar tumbling swing to crimson ballads, rants and prayers to diaries and hymns.

In the meantime, a look at the writing bureau where the book is taking shape from 5am each morning with a Japanese iron teapot of white peony tea.

THE THE

This post is a few days late but Ozzy Osbourne's recent passing stirred up some old memories. The first rock concert I ever saw was Black Sabbath. My late father was a friend of Billy Curbishley โ€“ manager of The Who. In the 1970s Billy had given my dad two pairs of tickets. One pair for Pink Floyd at Wembley Empire Pool. The other pair for Black Sabbath at Hammersmith Odeon.

My brother Andrew instantly grabbed the Pink Floyd tickets so I was left with Black Sabbath. I took my friend Mark. I was only 15. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d even heard Black Sabbath before, my prime interest in those days being T-Rex and David Bowie. It ended up being a baptism of fire.

The band hit the stage and Iโ€™d never previously experienced volume so loud โ€“ the bass drum pounding into my chest and dictating my heart beat. I thought I was going to have a heart attack! The entire audience simultaneously making the Devil horns hand sign. The place reeked of weed. Clouds of it. I felt like a bemused outsider at a cult gathering. Which I was. I could not wait for the entire experience to end. I left with my head spinning.

Ironically Ozzy and I became label mates at CBS / Sony for many years. Though I never met him I always felt an affection for him and for Black Sabbath โ€“ despite the disorientating experience at their hands โ€“ and respect for his devotion to his art.

RIP Ozzy.
