Making art is just like learning any other skill.
There is no shortcut through the awkward phase.
It's the struggle that makes the journey worth it.

This is a page from my sketchbook I’ve brought with me to Malaysia for 3 months. The paper isn’t really meant for watercolors but it can handle it to some extent. It allows me to draw or sketch when I want to and paint a little when I want to.
Something I’m guaranteed to see here every day are clouds. Figured I’d might as well try to paint some.

I feel like mundane things more easily make good art.
The more beautiful the scene or place, the more my paintings tend to 'fail'.
Either that or sometimes I just don't know what I'm doing. And that's probably true.

It was rare to get a cloudy day during the summer and autumn months at Folsom Lake in California. I had seen only blue sky and sun for so long that I actually wanted clouds for a change. I was lucky to get a couple of paintings with clouds. This is one of them. Turned out to be one of my favorite paintings.

Something I keep telling myself when my art doesn't turn out well:
Even bad art is better than no art.
You have to try, fail, and keep going to make progress.

You won’t find your art style in a book, video, or someone else's art.
You’ll find it in your own work.
Create until something begins to emerge.

There’s just something cool about a giant pile of rocks. Makes you think how long have they been there like that. How long will they stay like that? How many people have been here before me? And it’s just fun trying to make an interesting design from them. What do you think about rocks?

The best artists, musicians, and writers have an intuitive understanding of when to push forward and when to pull back.
The real challenge isn’t about forcing yourself to be creative.
It’s about finding the rhythm that works best for you.
