I’ve heard a lot of really good things about this book and I knew it was pretty short + I love depressing things so I decided to randomly pick this up recently.
Basically, this book is about a guy who wrote 3 notebooks detailing pretty much his entire lifetime, but he was born with an extreme fear of other human beings (plus some other mental problems that I really won’t even begin to try to address ☠️), so he has a pretty bad life. It also has a lot of philosophical elements to it which I appreciated 🤔
Anyway, yeah this book is incredibly depressing and probably one of the most hopeless books I’ve ever read which was very chilling yet interesting to me. The author clearly took a lot of risks in composing this which I’m a big fan of. I also really loved the writing style, and the way that this book was written (through the notebooks so it had a very reflective/melancholic feel).
As for Yozo Oba himself the MC, he’s such an interesting character in my opinion. There are some parts to him that I relate to like WAY too much (☠️) and I really loved his philosophical musings. It’s very interesting to see such a negative presence being the focus of a story to me. Also I thought it was very neat how I don’t feel like there was any particular moment that I could even call a peak in his story, but it’s just a very consistent, well-written story in my opinion. Not to mention the one-liners 🗣️🔥😭
I will admit though it is definitely painful at some points watching the negative spiral go lower and lower 😭
The rest of the cast isn’t stand-out at all in my opinion, but they did serve as very compelling dynamics for Yozo. Especially Horiki who I found to be such an interesting dynamic, and I really liked the other ones as well.
Overall a really good book in my opinion, but I really can’t recommend it to anyone who is looking for something that contains even one speck of hope ☠️
