Who We Are: Harris County Department of Education, or HCDE, supports the educational needs of 25 school districts in Harris County. Services are extended to children, adult learners, educators, local governments, charter schools and taxpayers. Our year-round services continue to evolve to meet your needs.
Board of Trustees: Seven board members act to establish policies governing the operation of HCDE. The board is elected by the citizens of Harris County. Board calendars, agendas, minutes and policies are posted and archived routinely.
Administration: County School Superintendent James Colbert, leads HCDE. Three assistant superintendents are administrators over our 21 divisions which provide services to districts and the general public.
History of HCDE: Formed in 1889, HCDE was the original area district to provide free public schools. Today, HCDE’s 1,200 employees provide education services for school districts and the general public in Harris County and beyond.
