COMMITTED The Musical is the story of Jazz Johnson, a bi-polar pianist who plays in church, theaters, gay bars, and ultimately dreams of playing on Broadway. Why is Black Masculinity judged by the way you dress? He loves fashion and has a girlfriend but when he admits he’s sexually fluid, those in and out of the LGBTQIA+ Community assume that he must fit the stereotype of an effeminate man when he doesn’t. When he gets fired from his church job he feels powerless so his bipolar episode leads him to prove his masculinity by dominating bottom guys unprotected which leads to STI’s. After his girlfriend leaves he goes to the subway platform to commit suicide and gets in a fight with a homophobe. These circumstances lead to him being COMMITTED to the Psychiatric Ward indefinitely unless his parents come from South Carolina to New York to get him out.
