"You must get an education. You must go to school, and you must learn to protect yourself. And you must learn to protect yourself with the pen, and not the gun." ~ josephine baker

Josephine Baker was a renowned American-born French entertainer, civil rights activist, and humanitarian. Rising to stardom in the 1920s, she dazzled audiences across Europe, especially in Paris, with her mesmerizing dance routines and bold, avant-garde performances. Beyond her success on stage, Baker devoted her life to social advocacy, using her celebrity to fight racism and injustices around the world. Her commitment to freedom and unity earned her numerous honors, including the Resistance Medal for her work against the Nazis during World War II and a place as an iconic figure in popular culture.
Baker's influence extended beyond entertainment into the realm of architecture and modern design—most notably through her interactions with the celebrated architect Le Corbusier. Fascinated by her artistic daring, Le Corbusier created sketches and conceptual ideas inspired by Baker’s graceful lines and dynamic spirit. In reflecting on the synergy between them, architects can learn the power of embracing cultural icons, societal movements, and human emotion in design. By integrating artistry, empathy, and a willingness to innovate, architects can craft spaces that resonate deeply with the communities they serve. Sponsored by iamthestudio

RiverRock, a house that was first envisioned as The Penfield House in 1959 but is only now coming to light from the archives, is the fulfillment of Frank Lloyd Wright's last residential design in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. This project, long believed to be lost to history, is the final Wright design that has not been constructed but is still connected to its original location. A particular poplar tree that was crucial to Wright's vision is still standing in its original location. Owners Sarah and Debbie Dykstra began on the difficult task of erecting the stone house exactly as Wright had intended two years ago, in 2023. They made sure that every visible element adhered to the original plans while subtly modifying it to comply with modern building requirements.

Hungary unveils its Expo 2025 Osaka pavilion, a place where architecture, tradition, and environment coexist peacefully. The building, which is located on the World Expo's waterfront, is reminiscent of Sou Fujimoto's circular island masterplan design. It embraces sustainability and tradition by using natural materials and traditional building methods that are shared by Japanese and Hungarian architecture. The building's materials and architectural layout are a reflection of both countries' histories, creating an area that feels strongly anchored in a common identity. The Expo's subject, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," is in line with this method, which portrays the natural and constructed worlds as one cohesive whole. The pavilion offers a multisensory experience based on the global language of music rather than a traditional display.
