The earliest varieties of cooking
The history of cooking is a mystery. When the flesh of a beast killed in a forest fire was discovered to be more appetizing and simpler to chew and digest than the usual raw meat, it is possible that early humans enjoyed roast meat for the first time by accident. However, it is likely that they did not start purposefully cooking food until after they had mastered the use of fire for light and warmth. There has been speculation that Peking man ate roasted meats, but there is no concrete proof to back up the theory. However, until the Paleolithic Period, when the Aurignacian inhabitants of southern France started to steam their food over hot embers by wrapping it in wet leaves, roasting spitted meats over fires remained essentially the only culinary technique. No more culinary innovations were produced until the invention of pottery during the Neolithic Period,
