Our Lady of Presentation Church is situated in the south end of Tamil Nadu a village called Mathapuram, which is near the town of Karungal in Kanyakumari District and belongs to the Kuzhithurai Diocese.
The place where the church is situated was initially used by the trading communities to offload their loads on a Stonehenge and used to take rest. By observing these activities a pious man who happened to pass through this way installed a “wooden cross” which was believed to be dating back to St.Thomas, the disciple of Jesus Christ. In the course of time, the spot became a “kurusadi”. Later the kurusadi was made as a small church by the natives.
In the year 1949, a wooden statue of our Mother Mary, made in Germany was installed by a priest. Since then the local people venerated this statue as our Lady of Presentation. There upon the name of the village “Villapatty” was changed as Mathapuram.
