Santa Cruz Ragtime

Ragtime music is a truly American music form that centers around the piano, but can also be heard on a few other instruments as well. Ragtime music is lively and fun, and grabs the attention of most people who hear it. Ragtime became wildly popular in the United States Midwest between 1895 and 1918. Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” was one of the more popular ragtime composers. Popularity dimmed after 1918, but there have been a few small revivals since.
Scott Joplin became really popular again in our time after “The Sting,” a 1973 movie that featured several of Joplin’s pieces, especially “The Entertainer.”
The “ragtime community” is a world-wide group of people who really enjoy ragtime music, and who easily make friends around the world with others who also enjoy ragtime. They share their tunes on YouTube, Facebook, and in ragtime festivals held primarily in the U.S. and Canada, and also in a few other countries as well.
