Maa Vue

As I laid the xim xaus beside my father, it felt as though two old friends were saying goodbye.

My father handcrafted this xim xaus more than three decades ago. For most of my life, wherever he went, it went too.

As I knelt beside him that day, I found myself wondering what would happen to its voice. It had only ever known his hands.

I found myself grieving for the xim xaus, too.

It’s been a week since my dad’s funeral. The last three months have felt like a blur. South Korea. Bringing Dad home. Zov hmo weekends. Funeral preparations. Then saying goodbye. For so long, there was always something that needed to be done: a phone call, a document, a decision, a responsibility. Now, for the first time in months, things are quiet.

My dad now rests beside my mom. After my mom passed, Dad visited her grave often. He would sit with her, talk to her, and cry. He missed her every day. Now they are together again.

I am proud of my family. We carried each other through one of the hardest chapters of our lives. We brought Dad home and laid him to rest beside Mom, exactly where he wanted to be. Thank you to everyone who helped us along the way and kept our family in your thoughts.

The funeral is over, but grief does not follow a schedule. I think I am still learning how to live in a world without my parents, one day at a time.

My heart hurts so much reading this message.
Thank you to the heroes and the Hmong families who were on the flight with my dad and stayed with him during such a frightening moment. Knowing he was not alone means more to our family than words can express.
Mob kuv lub plawv tshaj plaws li os.
Kuv txiv aws… koj puas paub tias kuv twb tuaj txog South Korea lawm thiab kuv twb nyob ntawm no nrog koj os?
Right now my dad is in the ICU in South Korea fighting for his life. Our family is doing everything we can while navigating this unexpected medical crisis overseas.
If you are able to help or even just share, it would mean so much to our family during this time.

Thank you for the prayers, kindness, and support you have shown our family.

I never imagined I would be writing something like this. Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been in South Korea this past week. The reason is something our family never saw coming.

My dad, Vang Vue, became critically ill during his return flight home from Laos. When the plane landed, he was rushed to the ICU and is now sedated while doctors work to stabilize him.

Many of you know my dad as the musician who brought the sound of his xim xaus, also known as the erhu, into the music we created together. Some of my favorite moments on stage have been the ones where we shared that music side by side.

It’s not easy for me to ask for help, but we created a fundraiser to help support us during this time. If you’re able to donate or simply share the link, it would mean more to our family than I can say.

Thank you for keeping our family in your thoughts.

The Dream Carrier brought together music, dance, story, and community in a way that reminded me what it means to belong. That night, the room felt alive, filled with people listening, feeling, and connecting through something greater than us. It reminded me why I create and what it means to carry hope forward. There’s more to share from that night, and I’m still taking it all in. The next chapter of The Dream Carrier begins in 2026. 💛

That night in France, I sang “Niam Tus Txiaj Ntsig.” It’s the song my mom and I wrote together.

I often think about how the best parts of me come from her. My laughter, my love for people, my joy for life. Those are the pieces of her that live in me.

That night, as I sang our song, I felt her there with me.

I’m proud to carry her light wherever I go.

Ua tsaug os, kuv niam.

Thank you to @christyvang.production for capturing this moment and thank you to @sea.of.gamerelated for gifting this beautiful dress for my performance. 💙
