The memorandum of understanding to end the US-Israeli war on Iran has cast a spotlight on potential implications for Gaza amid ongoing indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel to implement a September 2025 ceasefire that has never truly taken root.

While welcoming the US-Iran deal in a 15 June statement, it is clear that Hamas was not consulted and is not a party to the agreement. As geopolitical priorities shift, Gaza's exclusion from the US-Iran agreement highlights its waning role in regional diplomacy.

In the 1980s, the Geshuri chemical factory faced intense legal battles over the public health hazards it posed to Israeli citizens.

The solution: to relocate it just hundreds of meters from Palestinian homes in Tulkarm.

Today, Israeli authorities refuse to recognize Palestinian environmental laws, creating a two-tier legal system where polluters operate with impunity.

James Purnell (right) is poised to join the team of Andy Burnham (left), who is likely to become the UK’s next prime minister in the coming weeks, as his chief of staff.

Purnell was a cabinet minister under Tony Blair in the 2000s, and he served as chair of the Zionist lobby group Labour Friends of Israel between 2002 and 2004. Burnham himself has been a member of the group since 2015.

Since leaving parliament, Purnell went on to become BBC's strategy director and then chief executive of Flint Global, a firm representing arms companies, private water firms and tech giants.

The appointment of Purnell to the influential position of chief of staff comes as Burnham scrambles to prepare his team for government before Keir Starmer formally steps down on July 17.

Both Purnell and Burnham have known each other for years, having shared an officer during the Blair era when they were both MPs. Both Burnham and Purnell also voted in favour of the allied invasion of Iraq and against investigations into it.

Catalan authorities in Spain have taken preliminary steps in a legal complaint against journalist Pilar Rahola, in which she is accused of incitement to hatred and complicity in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

The legal action was brought by two activists from the Socialist Youth Organisation (OJS) of Catalonia.

The Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Barcelona has opened pre-trial investigative proceedings to verify the facts and determine whether the case against Rahola should be referred to a court or dismissed.

The incidents cited in the complaint took place between 2024 and 2025. In one incident, Rahola publicly questioned the number of children killed in Israel's attacks on Gaza.

Another item in the complaint relates to Rahola replying to a post on X by UN special rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, where she denied Israel was committing genocide in Gaza and accused Albanese of being a propagandist for hatred.

The OJS activists want the prosecutor's office to open an investigation into Rahola as part of a "machinery of barbarity," and they accuse her of "building the social framework that makes it possible for the crime to be carried out and for its perpetrators to enjoy impunity".

This is not the first time the activists have crossed paths with Rahola. In October 2024, they were faced with charges after they threw red paint towards her during a lecture organised by the Fundació Martí l'Humà in La Garriga.

In the wake of a slew of successful attempts in blocking Israel-bound ships from leaving ports, the Palestinian-led BDS movement has now urging an intensification of the #BlockTheBoat campaign worldwide.

In Egypt, BDS said authorities must investigate a cargo ship that was recently discharged at Port Said and to obstruct its transshipment to Israel, and also impose measures to halt the flow of future military equipment to Israel via Egypt.

BDS also called for an escalation of pressure on authorities in sea ports across the Mediterranean and around the world to stop the illegal transfer of military and dual-use materiel to Israel by investigating and taking appropriate action, including the confiscation of illegal military and dual-use cargo en route to Israel.

In addition, BDS urged Danish and Singaporean authorities to investigate vessels flying their flag for involvement in shipping illegal military materiel to Israel and to adopt effective sanctions and remedial measures in case they are.

Finally, BDS highlighted the need to continue pressuring shipping giants Maersk, MSC, and all other shipping companies to end their criminal complicity in facilitating the supply of military materiel to Israel despite its genocide, apartheid and illegal occupation.

Palestinian Civil Defense crews in Gaza recovered the remains of 40 victims from Sheikh Radwan Cemetery after parts of the cemetery were disturbed during Israeli ground operations in the area, on Tuesday 24 June.

In a statement, the Civil Defense said the bulldozing operations led to the exhumation and mixing of human remains, making identification more difficult and requiring forensic analysis to determine the identities of the deceased.

Abdullah Al-Majdalawi, Director of Public Relations and Media for the Civil Defense in Gaza Governorate, said rescue teams are facing major challenges in identifying the recovered remains. He explained that many of the remains consist of decomposed skeletal fragments belonging to children and elderly victims.

Gaza City is facing a severe shortage of burial space, with Sheikh Radwan Cemetery and the Christian cemetery in eastern Gaza among the few remaining operational burial grounds.

Families have resorted to reopening old graves and burying multiple individuals in the same grave as burial costs continue to rise.
