Pope Leo XIV this morning made a surprise appearance in a Zoom call with the priests of the towns of Rmeish, Debel, and Ain Ibel in southern Lebanon.

According to what Bishop George Iskandar posted on his Facebook account, the Pope also "expressed his spiritual closeness to the sons and daughters of the south, stressing that he is fully aware of what is happening in this suffering region, and that he carries its people, its priests, its families, its wounded, and those worried about their fate, in his prayers and his fatherly heart."

The Pope also used the occasion to say he was striving to establish peace in Lebanon, and concluded his speech by giving the Apostolic Blessing to everyone.

Teresa Regina de Ávila e Silva, the mother of Brazilian pro-Palestine solidarity activist Thiago Ávila, has died in Brasília while her son remains in Israeli custody after being kidnapped in international waters.

Thiago Ávila was among activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla intercepted by Israeli authorities last week.

News of the passing of his mother comes a day after an Israeli court has extended his detention, as well that of another activist, until May 10.

Earlier, Trump sought to minimise the war with Iran by calling it "a little skirmish."

Four British pro-Palestinian activists have been convicted of criminal damage relating to a 2024 raid on a factory operated by Israeli defence firm Elbit. Two other defendants were acquitted.

Prosecutors at London's Woolwich Crown Court said the six defendants were members of the now-banned group Palestine Action, which organised the assault on the Elbit Systems UK facility in Bristol, southwest England, in August 2024.

The six – Charlotte Head, 30, Samuel Corner, 23, Leona Kamio, 30, Fatema Zainab Rajwani, 21, Zoe Rogers, 22, and Jordan Devlin, 31 – had all denied charges of criminal damage.

Head, Corner, Kamio and Rajwani were found guilty, while Rogers and Devlin were found not guilty.
