Iran has vowed to take revenge against the US and Israel as it prepared to hold the funerals of security chief Ali Larijani and the head of the Basij paramilitary force, Gholamreza Soleimani, who were assassinated by Israel earlier this week.



Larijani was the most prominent Iranian figure killed by US-Israeli forces since the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the opening day of the war on 28 February.

A letter, signed by 45 cross-party MPs and peers, says it is time the UK apologised for Britain’s withdrawal from Palestine in 1947, which led to the creation of Israel.

The Balfour Declaration was a 1917 letter from Britain's then-foreign secretary Lord Balfour, which pledged British support for the fledgling Zionism movement and for a “national home for the Jewish people”.

This paved the way for waves of migration of European Jews to Palestine, and the establishment and growth of Jewish settlements.

The declaration eventually led to the withdrawal of British troops in 1947, which led to the 1948 Nakba, when hundreds and thousands of Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes and land to make way for the formation of Israel.
