In June 2024, the University of Minnesota offered Professor Raz Segal the position of Stephen C Feinstein Chair and director of its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, along with a tenured position in its history department.

But a campaign against his appointment erupted shortly after, with critics pointing to an article written by the Israeli academic and genocide scholar in which he described Israel’s brutal military campaign on Gaza as “a textbook case of genocide unfolding in front of our eyes.” He was one of the first scholars to state this, via an article published in Jewish Currents just six days after Israel began its assault on Gaza in October 2023.

The university withdrew the job offer just five days after they initially appointed him.

Now, more than two years later, Segal has secured a legal victory, reaching a £250,000 settlement with the University of Minnesota.

When Solidere was established in 1994, Lebanon was emerging from a 15-year civil war that had left the historic heart of Beirut in ruins.

The company was granted exceptional legal powers to consolidate thousands of fragmented properties into a single real estate company, compensate former owners with shares and oversee the reconstruction of the city centre.

Its original mandate envisaged liquidation after 25 years, with planning powers eventually returning to public authorities. That deadline was later extended to 2029.

Ministers are now being asked to revisit that decision three years before the company reaches its existing deadline.

The leaders of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have just signed a joint defence agreement, as the three countries seek to deepen security cooperation amid heightened military tensions and conflicts in the region.

The pact, signed in Saudi Arabia, further cements a burgeoning grouping of major Sunni Muslim-majority powers.

Turkey is a member of NATO, while Saudi Arabia, another US ally, is one of the world's top oil exporters and the strongest Gulf state.

Meanwhile Pakistan is the only nuclear-armed Muslim country. Pakistan's foreign ministry said that an attack on any member of the new tri-party pact would be regarded as an attack on all.

Donald Trump’s Board of Peace for Gaza has secured its first construction contract: a provisional deal to build a rudimentary military outpost for 150 Moroccan troops inside the Palestinian territory.

According to a source familiar with the plans who spoke to the Guardian, the yet-to-be-finalised contract was awarded to Arkel International, a Louisiana-based firm that has previously carried out work for the US government in countries including Iraq.

The planned outpost would measure just 100m x 120m for a contingent of Moroccan soldiers rotating from a base inside Israel, according to the source.

In an email seen by the Guardian, a Board of Peace official said that the organization and the Palestinian technocratic body overseeing Gaza - known as the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza - were “in the final stages of preparing several contract awards. The email also emphasised that none had yet been completed.

The Board of Peace is chaired by the US president and led by a team that includes his son-in-law Jared Kushner and friend Steve Witkoff.

Before last week, many would never have heard of Ceuta or been able to point it out on a map.

But all that changed with the sudden migration of around 60,000 people, mostly Moroccans, into the Spanish enclave along the North African coast. Videos went viral showing thousands of mostly Moroccan migrants swimming and clambering up rocks to enter Ceuta in the hope of finding a better future.

Tragically, at least 72 people died making the journey, with many still missing. The crisis unfolded on King Mohammed VI’s 27th Throne Day anniversary on 30 July. As many as 50,000 people were believed to have crossed in 24 hours.

Since then, mass military operations have been underway to stop the numbers from rising and to regain control of the border. By Friday evening, the Spanish government announced that at least 48,000 of the 60,000 people had returned to Morocco.

Despite this, far-right media and reactionary politicians seized on the Ceuta tragedy to fuel a dangerous and racist anti-immigrant narrative, writes Olivia Hooper.

According to the Israeli rights group B’Tselem, it's the first time an Israeli has been indicted in the killing of a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023.

Israeli prosecutors charged Yinon Levi, an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank, over the killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in Umm al-Khair, near Hebron.

According to an indictment filed in district court, prosecutors accuse Yinon Levi of reckless manslaughter in the death of Hathaleen in July 2025. The charge holds a lesser punishment than murder under Israeli law. The indictment also charges Levi with armed trespassing and malicious property damage.

Hathaleen was a prominent activist against settler violence, and was involved in the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land" about Palestinians resisting the demolition of their villages.
