Russia's Council for Civil Society and Human Rights has appealed to the UN over the detention in Israel of Russian-Israeli historian Artyom Kirpichenok, who has not been seen or contacted since arriving at Ben Gurion Airport on 4 Aug to attend a conference.

The Council believes the arrest was motivated by his political views, and has called on the UN to demand answers from Israeli authorities and ensure he receives legal representation and medical care, given his serious health condition.

Members of Morocco's Association of Bar Associations went on strike on 15 June in protest at a judicial overhaul which they say threatens the independence of the legal profession.

On Friday 28 August, the association announced it would continue the strike in pursuit of the law's annulment "in order to defend the independence of the profession, the immunity of the defence, and its organisational autonomy."

Israeli media reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's son, Yair Netanyahu, was urgently returned from the United States to Israel on 30 August.

The report follows claims published days earlier by US network Newsmax that Yair Netanyahu had been the target of an Iranian assassination plot while staying in southern Florida.

Benjamin Netanyahu is subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Around 2500-3000 Palestinians have been reported as missing and forcibly disappeared in Gaza since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, according to The Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared (PCMFD).

The report is part of an analytical study conducted by the centre on a sample of 317 cases, which showed indicators that warranted an investigation into the possibility of a wider pattern of enforced disappearances.

It was published ahead of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, which falls on 30 August each year.

Two security commanders from the “National Guard” militia were injured by gunfire during clashes that took place in Suweida city.

Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, a Druze religious leader who formed the militia, recently said Suweida province was “an integral part of the State of Israel.”

This came however amid reported talks between parties linked to him and the Syrian government, amid attempts to reach an arrangement that would bring the ongoing crisis in Suweida province to an end.

Iraqi armed factions have proposed placing their weapons in their own storage facilities for two years, rather than handing their arsenals to the state, which the Iraqi government has rejected.

Iranian exports and imports have slumped nearly 35% because of US sanctions and a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The German Left Party has strongly condemned Volkswagen's deal to convert production at its Osnabrück plant to military equipment in partnership with Israel's state-owned defence company Rafael.
