Red River George

A recreational climber with a camera and a few good friends. This channel is certainly more of an archive than a highlight reel. I don't edit out my mistakes.

49:10 ‪@training4climbing‬responded to my question during his LIVE Training Cafe!

Eric Horst is a legend, I have most of his books on climbing. Currently in week 8 of his 10 week training plan.

It was so cool to hear his words directed towards me. Thank you Eric, you're the best, I love your content so much.

Hopefully our paths cross one day.

2025 Channel updates:

New year, new goals, new name, AND a new logo? Wait, who's George?

For those of you that know me in real life, you know that about 16 months ago, I was given the opportunity for my dream job. At work, I'm surrounded by folks that love what I love; climbing.

I still sometimes think that I am dreaming and that I simply haven't woken up yet. Despite my failures and shortcomings throughout the last decade, it somehow... all worked out. Every day seems to truly be a gift and I can't say how appreciative I am for my team, my supervisor, and all those that have believed in me (especially when I didn't). 2025 is bound to bring out the best in all of us.

I've always been a mover. Growing up, I remember around the holidays my relatives would ask me what my favorite classes were at school. My answer was never math, science, history or language arts. It was always P.E. and recess. They would say that those didn't count, but to me, they surely did. Since being fully immersed into the world of climbing at my new job, I get to talk about movement, proprioception, fitness, and nutrition almost everyday. Life couldn't get any better.

For years, while searching for a job in the climbing industry, I chose to keep my channel name as my own so that when future employers googled me, they'd see my youtube channel as the first result. Since that box is now checked, I've revealed a name and logo that I've been working on for a long time. My hope is to increase exposure to my channel and content through some merch involving the new logo. I'm working hard to design more apparel and to increase the listings on my Etsy store. Proceeds will go directly towards benefiting the channel and purchasing some things I've always wanted to produce better content. Things on the list are a drone, a more powerful computer, better hardware to back up my footage, a microphone, and potentially some lessons or classes in video editing. For now, the best way to support the channel would be to check out my Etsy store and see if you like any of my designs enough to rep them yourself.

Red River "George" is a play on words with the Red River Gorge, as well as a name that is important to my family's history. As an American, I've always revered George Washington for his tactics and tenacity to kick out the Brits. Also, for his passion that drove him to want to claim this land as his own.

No one in my family was or is named George. The name George pays homage to my Papou (greek for Grandpa). His name was Bill. Papou left Greece and dropped his anchor in Columbus, Ohio in 1951. Instead of buying a car, Papou took the bus for 7 years to wash dishes for George, the owner of George's Coney Island. He saved enough money and bought the restaurant in pursuit of his American dream. Papou and the story of his life is legendary. Growing up, I worked at George's, too. Hence, the context of the layers behind the name, Red River "George."

My trusty belayer and climbing partner Matt is moving out of state in February for his dream job. It's hard to see him go, but don't worry, he'll still only be a 4-hour drive away from the Red. Brandon climbed well at Red Rocks last November, so he's got some momentum going into 2025. My new training partner, Andy will certainly give the crew a boost in many ways, too. Nonetheless, the adventures and the youtube archive will continue!

Speaking of Andy, he's an old friend that I recently reconnected with. Andy and I have been training together two days a week for the last 4 weeks. We've adopted Eric Horst's 10-week training cycle from his book "How to Climb 5.12." Currently, we are entering week 5. We plan to get out to the Red for our first trip of the year in March to gauge our soon-to-be newfound fitness.

My crew and I want to make 2025 the year of 5.12's. This Spring we will build the base of our real-rock-send-pyramid with dozens of 5.10s and 5.11s to ultimately gain enough experience (and confidence) to send a 5.12a. The overarching goal is to get on as many 5.12s as possible this Spring and select a few lines to train for specifically in order to redpoint them by October.

The Spring climbing season will serve as a scouting mission to find the lines that will keep us up at night, causing us to rehearse the beta over and over in our minds, and fixate on discovering the sequences to the sends. After Spring, a full Summer of (you guessed it) more training, should allow us to become 5.12 climbers by the end of 2025.

Something that I've never mentioned on my channel before is that for years, I've become a disciple of Dr. Eric Berg, Thomas Delaur, and Ben Patrick. Their content on youtube is gold. I plan to continue the daily practice of 18-22 hour fasts, fueling my body ketogenically, and enhancing my flexibility. The combination of the above will forge the cornerstone to accomplish my goals for 2025.

Another goal for this year is to diversify the content on my channel. I need your help, inspiration, and feedback on what type of videos to create. POV climbing videos are usually what I post, but I want to take on new challenges.

Vote in the poll below to let me know what type of video I should focus on creating next. Or comment below with new ideas.

Adventurously,

George ;)

The photos say it all. Leading 3 friends up both pitches of Bedtime for Bonzo was a day to remember. Thank you ‪@sam_metal‬ for the canvas worthy stills.
