āYou donāt need a program bro, just train with intuition!ā
Iām probably not the only one who has been hearing this more lately, yeah? š
Let me ask you a simple question to settle this:
Would you rather KNOW what you are doingā¦
⦠Or NOT know what you are doing?
I think the answer is simple, but still people will say:
āI have a friend who doesnāt follow any plan, and he looks great!ā
Which is basically like saying:
āI donāt need to stop drinking, I know this one guy who drinks everyday and heās fine!ā š
Now to be serious: I do understand why some people get this wrong though.
When I ask world record holders and top athletes in calisthenics how they got to their level, some will say:
āI donāt know bro, I just train.ā
But then I ask some questions, and I figure out that they used a plan for years, watched 1000 youtube videos on training, and spoke to 20 different fitness coachesā¦
To the point that they can walk into a gym with years of experience and ājust trainā.
You see, itās basically like learning how to box.
At the start, you have to pay attention to how you punch, where you put the feet, what angle your elbow is inā¦
(And probably you have to watch some videos or have a coach help you to get it right)
But after a while, you donāt need to think about it anymore, and it feels natural.
Of course that doesnāt mean you can tell a completely new guy ājust box bro, use your intuitionā...
Because he doesnāt know how to do it properly yet, and his intuition will make him do wrong things.
So then you can ask yourself:
If the guy who has trained for 10 years says he ājust trains with intuitionā...
Is he really training with intuition?
Or is he training with years of knowledge and experience? šæ
Ian Barseagle
PS: Just to be clear, if you feel a pain while you are working out, listen to your body when it tells you to stop training.
A good plan or program gives you all the knowledge you need to train efficiently, but of course that doesnāt mean you should ignore your intuition when you think something doesnāt feel right.
The point is that everyone who wants to become a beast who can do skills, needs to learn from someone whoās already done itā¦
And the more you learn, the more you can listen to your knowledge to make more progress.
Ian Barseagle
You know bro: small achievements are important too.
I know I show off the guys who get to 50KG dips in 4 months, or the guys who can do crazy skills before they even hit pubertyā¦
(Like I had a 14 year old student who was doing weighted muscle ups, which still sounds a bit crazy to me. š)
But I just wanted to remind you that everyone starts somewhere.
Sure, thereās a lot of guys who make some very nice progress in weighted calisthenicsā¦
But for every one of those, thereās also a guy who goes from 5 bodyweight pull ups to 10+ in just a week or two.
Obviously, this is not as ādramaticā as most people see on IG or youtubeā¦
But that doesnāt make it any less impressive.
So if right now, you can only do a few bodyweight pull ups or dips, and you see these huge beasts popping up on your feedā¦
Do NOT get demotivated, okay?
Just know that it doesnāt matter where you start, or who is ahead of youā¦
As long as you find a way to be better than you were yesterdayā¦
Thatās already a big achievement. šæ

You donāt have to train like a bodybuilder to look like oneā¦
Most guys think they need to be in the gym 5 days a week, train for 2 hours long and do 10 different exercisesā¦
But Iāll be honest:
9/10 times, guys train like this for an entire year, and then look in the mirror to ask themselves why theyāre still so skinny. š
Itās normal though:
The only reason why chasing the pump with too much volume is so popular, is because of the big bodybuilders of 40-50 years agoā¦
As you probably know, a lot of these guys liked to use a little bit of help (š)...
And in this situation, it doesnāt matter how they trained.
They could grow muscle with ANY method.
So they chose to use a āsaferā failure strategy, which is high volume with moderate weightsā¦
Instead of the most efficient failure strategy: high intensity.
(That doesnāt mean high intensity training is not safe, you just need more knowledge)
So just to say: if you want to look and lift like a bodybuilder, while staying naturalā¦
You will progress MUCH quicker with a few sets at proper intensity, than with 10 exercises of 5 sets eachā¦
Because maybe you donāt have any āspecial helpā...
But you donāt need that, if you have knowledge. šæ

Itās crazy how much respect you get when you have a good physiqueā¦
And I didnāt realize how far it goes, until someone sent me a DMā¦
⦠And they asked me for MARRIAGE advice bro.
(Iām 23, what do I know about marriage? š)
But it makes sense if you think about it.
Because how you do one thing, is usually how you do everything.
So people see big biceps and proper shoulders, but they donāt JUST see thatā¦
They see a disciplined guy with serious goals, who is willing to push himself.
And if this guy walks into a job interviewā¦
The guy across from him will assume he is a hard worker, and he wonāt just watch youtube all day.
Or if you walk into a room, people you have never met will be more likely to listen when you speakā¦
Because they donāt just see big musclesā¦
They see a serious person with serious goals and serious commitment.
And thatās someone worth listening to. šæ

I see a lot of guys get demotivated when they hit plateausā¦
But hereās the thing bro: the more plateaus you hitā¦
⦠The more you actually progress.
I know it sounds a bit crazy, but look at it like this:
Letās say you could add 5KG to your set every session.
Even if you start from 0, after 30 training sessions you would be a top level athleteā¦
But thatās not how it works, because progress gets harder when you get to a higher level.
(And you need a higher level of knowledge and training to smash those plateaus)
Because in the beginning, the solution is always:
āJust eat more, sleep better, fix this thing about your form, ā¦ā
And in these situations itās very easy to smash plateaus.
But the higher your level, the higher the problems.
So then when you start to use a better method, improve the quality of your diet, fix the mindsetā¦
You will realize those plateaus are not such a big problem, and they shouldnāt demotivate you.
Because the #1 thing these plateaus doā¦
Is force you to upgrade your method, your knowledge, your skillsā¦
Which means that you progress MORE than before the plateau.
And you canāt be angry at progress, yeah bro? šæ
