Dr. Nirmal Immanuel | Orthopedic Surgeon
The hardest part of my job isn't the surgery. It's undoing the fear a scan report has already planted.
A patient walks in clutching their MRI. They've read the words "disc bulge," "degeneration," "annular tear." They've already decided they're broken. Sometimes they've already decided they need surgery. And often, after I examine them, the truth is gentler than the paper they're holding.
Here's something most people are never told: if we scanned a hundred people walking around with no pain at all, a huge number of them would show "abnormalities" too. Bulges. Wear. Changes. They have no idea, because nothing hurts. The scan was never the whole story.
This is not me telling you to ignore your pain. Read slide 6 carefully — there are warning signs that always, always need a doctor. But for the vast majority of everyday aches, the most damaging thing isn't what's on the film. It's the belief that you're fragile.
Pain is real. Pain is complex. But pain is not always proof of damage. And understanding that difference is sometimes the beginning of getting better.
Comment PAIN and I'll DM you a simple guide — how to make sense of your pain, and how to know when it's something to act on.
Save this for the next time a report frightens you. 🧠
